Ray came to B.C. from Saskatchewan with his family by covered wagon when he was 5 years old. They bought 27 acres at 7 mile on Kootenay Lake outside of Nelson. The family farmed, raised & sold vegetables, eggs, meat & fruit. Ray was a happy go lucky, hardworking, kind & generous man & a friend to many. He married Joan Kerby in 1952 & they started a family & moved to the East Kootenays in 1954.

Kimberley City Council Report By Nowell Berg On August 17, City of Kimberley council held its regular bi-monthly meeting. Councillors Sue Cairns, Diana Fox, Woody Maguire and Sandra Roberts were present along with Mayor Don McCormick. Coun. Kevin Dunnebacke and Jason McBain attended via video link. Calling singers for the 26-27 Mountain Song Choir season
Mountain Song Choirs are celebrating the launch of their updated brand and expanded programming welcoming singers to join this upcoming 2026–2027 season. With dedicated ensembles for both youth and adults, Mountain Song offers a welcoming and enjoyable ensemble guided by experienced local music educators. SIDC issues fewer driver prohibitions
By BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) At first glance, B.C. drivers are doing a much better job of driving sober during the Summer Impaired Driver Campaign (SIDC). The 2026 SIDC saw significantly fewer impaired driving prohibitions (229) compared to the 2025 campaign (626), but temporary staffing redeployments and a much shorter campaign were significant factors.

A difficult goodbye at Fort Steele
It is with heavy hearts that we share the loss of Duchess, one of our beloved Clydesdales. Duchess was born right here at Fort Steele Heritage Town and was a very special part of our site, our staff and our community. After Duchess sustained an injury, our team worked closely with Tanglefoot Veterinary Services, Moore’s Equine Veterinary Services in Calgary, and our equine nutritionist over the past several weeks to provide care and explore every available treatment option.
