Soaring cost of cement is taking toll on Federal Government road projects, Minister for works said yesterday. It said the trend, if not checked, could hamper government’s delivery on projects, especially on roads and the Renewed Housing Projects. The government has scheduled series of engagement with cement manufacturers from July 1 to discuss on to how to reverse the trend. A 50kg bag of cement sells for not less than N12,500.

Trading on the Nigerian Exchange, NGX closed on a positive note, with the market capitalization of listed equities rising by N1.52 trillion, or one per cent, to N152.85 trillion from N151.33 trillion recorded at the close of trading last week.

The US Treasury said Monday it is temporarily lifting sanctions on Iran to allow the Islamic Republic to produce, sell and deliver crude oil and related products through August 21. “All transactions” that were previously prohibited involving the production, sale, and transport of Iranian-origin crude oil “are authorized through 12:01 am eastern daylight time, August 21, 2026,” according to a license published by the Treasury Department, which administers US economic sanctions.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has begun the collation of results from the Ekiti State governorship election. The exercise is being held at the state collation centre in Ado Ekiti, the state capital. The Returning Officer for the Ekiti State governorship election is the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Professor Adenike Oladiji. The votes scored by the different political parties from the 16 local government areas have been announced.

The protesters converged in the area around 10 am, led by a human rights group, Take It Back Movement. The protesters are demanding an end to insecurity in the country and calling for the release of the abducted 39 school children and teachers in Oyo State.

The Ogun State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a former Ogun State Television broadcaster, Kitan Oyesiku, and her security guard at her residence in Iyana Agodo Village, Owode-Egba area of the state. The command, in a statement by its Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the incident on Sunday.

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, at the Kuje Correctional Centre. He will remain in custody until Wednesday when proceedings will resume on a two-count cybercrime charge the Department of State Services (DSS) filed against him for calling President Bola Tinubu a “criminal” in a social media post. Sowore’s remand followed the revocation of the bail the court earlier granted him.
