A single-engine plane crashed into a police helicopter at a Pennsylvania airport, killing the plane's pilot. The pilot was identified as Dr. Paul William Sokoloski, an emergency medicine doctor. Two state troopers in the helicopter were injured but are expected to recover.

A witness to the crash said he saw the Virginia driver maneuvering aggressively around another vehicle shortly before the crash.

Environmental advocates are decrying the proposed rollback of federal rules that protect vast tracts of forest in Pennsylvania from logging and road-building. The proposal would rescind the so-called Roadless Rule, a 2001 provision that protects about 45 million acres of American wilderness from road construction and timber harvesting. In the commonwealth, the rule covers 25,000 acres in the Allegheny National Forest, an expanse of woodland that sprawls across northwestern Pennsylvania.

The pilot of a plane killed in a midair collision with a Pennsylvania State Police helicopter Aug. 19 at Carlisle Regional Airport had been a commercial pilot since 2010 and became a certified flight instructor on Feb. 12 of this year, according to documents from the Federal Aviation Administration. Dr. Paul W. Sokoloski, an emergency department physician with Penn State Health, died in the crash that left two state police troopers injured. He was 57 years old.
