In this semiquincentennial year we are casting back at all the music we have played thus far at the mid-point of the year and seeing which releases stood out. We’ve compiled a ranked list of 30 recordings that we think rose above the crowd and today, we’re going to hear the Top 20.

He plays an instrument called the mutantrumpet which has 3 trumpet bells, a trombone slide, two sets of valves and a lot of electronics. He’s been making music on the edges of electronica since his 1995 album, Green Machine.

Ben Neill has been on the bleeding edge of new and electronic music for decades. He created his own instrument, the Mutantrumpet, which has three bells, two valve sets, a mini-trombone slide and all kinds of electronics to create a music that references Miles Davis and lounge music, urban jungle beats and space music overdrive.
We have music by Shekina Rose, a singer from Sedona who is fully immersed in that town’s new age culture. She’s got a song for whales. We’ll also hear the electronic Arabic fusion of Didon remixed by Bombay Dub Orchestra. Music is the universal language on Echoes with John Diliberto from PRX.
