Singer Agnes Obel returns with her first album in six years, The Meaning of Flowers. It’s a haunting meditation on motherhood and fame. It’s also the Echoes CD of the Month for October. The Danish singer, musician and composer is someone who is close to our hearts. I think Echoes gave Obel her first national exposure in 2010, when she released her debut album, Philharmonics. We interviewed her, and she played live on the show.

In the beginning, there was Will Ackerman. The guitarist and founder of Windham Hill Records launched a movement in 1976. He created a new wave in music that brought new acoustic instrumental music into the mainstream. It was 50 years ago that he founded Windham Hill Records with his debut album. We profiled Will and Windham Hill earlier this year. Today, I talk to will about his new album, Home, and a state of mind where the end is much closer than the beginning.

Iconic German electronic band Kraftwerk haven’t released new music in decades, so they’ve turned their work over to remixers for a double CD set just called Remixes. We’ll hear that and new music by Lis Addison from her album of serene chants, Elements. It’s all part of the soundscape on Echoes from PRX.

Music by Mamak Khadem, the extraordinary Iranian singer. She has an album of Persian fusion called Remembrance. We’ll also hear some downtempo eastern grooves by the Zikr Project. John Diliberto journeys east, west and beyond.

On the next Echoes, downtempo artist Bonobo goes even more chill with his album, Distance in Static. And on the acoustic side, we’ll hear the latest from finger-style virtuoso Tim Farrell, Hidden Treasure. John Diliberto digs it up on Echoes from PRX.
