Summer Re-Release Blues and Reds
Nina missed the blues and reds of home—specifically the blue jays and cardinals that used to visit her feeder. She had known when she emigrated from Earth to New Sealand that the world had no native birds. Its natural colors were also dull in comparison to those found on Earth. The government was doing a study to see if a few Earth birds could safely be introduced to the ecosystem. Jays and cardinals weren’t on the list.

Jaz never grew tired of watching Maisie and Belle wind their way through the flowers on her deck. It also never ceased to amaze her how well the two cats got along, or that Belle had deigned to join their little family. Maisie had lived her life as a pampered house cat. Not Belle. Belle had shown up on Jaz’s deck three summers ago, looking anything but beautiful. A scrawny, hissing, walking fur mat, she had been filthy and bedraggled. And hungry.

“Moms?” Shelley started, finally working up to the reason she had called this family meeting. At least her two younger siblings were in bed, so there wouldn’t be any little ears listening in. Both of her moms waited, their full attention on their oldest child. She squirmed a little under that attention, though normally it wouldn’t have felt so much like she was under a microscope.

Summer Vacation
As those of you who regularly read my newsletter will know, I’ve been trying to restructure my work to both decrease my stress and find a way to support myself financially. Part of that has included decreasing the number of times a week I publish stories. Over the last few months, I’ve found myself continuing to feel stressed and more depressed than I have in a long time. I’ve realized that a number of factors continue to contribute to this.

Splatter of raindrops Teeming sheets of grey streaked glass Boots splash in puddles Blue skies overhead Golden kisses warm my face Hiking trail beckons Unrelenting heat Seek out airconditioned space Maybe movie time A few weeks ago, Jason McBride published a fun haiku titled “Intergalactic Summer Smores.” At the end of his post, he added a prompt: Write a haiku or series of haiku about what summer means to you. Feel free to use either the 5-7-5 or free verse formats. Naturally, I wrote three.
