New York City, home to the nation’s largest public school district with nearly 1 million students, banned artificial intelligence usage for students in preschool through the eighth grade. The New York City Department of Education’s new policy, announced on Sept. 2 for the 2026-2027 school year, also recommends strict screen time limits for third to fifth graders. The ban covers generative AI as well as “chatbots” and AI tutors.

On July 1, the Trump administration’s flagship Workforce Pell program launched, expanding financial aid for students enrolled in short-term workforce programs across the nation. The U.S. Department of Education said that the changes will expand access to high-value workforce training programs for the most financially in-need Americans. In August, the department announced its first approval for Workforce Pell, a 14-week emergency medical technician training in Iowa.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Education Writers Association Board of Directors today announced Beth Francesco as the organization’s next Executive Director, effective Sept. 28, 2026. Francesco joins EWA from the National Press Club Journalism Institute, where she served as executive director for nearly four years and held leadership roles since 2019. She brings deep experience in journalism, education, nonprofit leadership, program growth, fundraising and building professional communities for journalists.

Some state boards of education are moving to a high school model that offers more opportunities for career exploration while also working to maintain rigorous academics, aimed at ensuring graduates are prepared for a variety of postsecondary options.
