Brussels, 8 September 2026 – Today, several environmental organisations lodged a formal complaint with the European Ombudswoman, alleging maladministration by the European Commission over its decision to revise the Water Framework Directive (WFD), Europe’s cornerstone water protection law, and one of the EU’s key defences against growing climate extremes.

Today marks the deadline for EU countries to submit their draft National Restoration Plans under the EU Nature Restoration Law. Environmental organisations urge governments to move beyond box-ticking and set out credible, science-based plans that deliver restoration on the ground. As wildfires, droughts, heatwaves and other climate-driven disasters intensify across Europe, nature restoration is more urgent than ever.

Brussels, 28 August 2026 – The European Commission has replied to an open letter from more than 60 civil society organisations, trade unions and public interest groups warning that its planned overhaul of the Better Regulation framework would privilege corporate interests. The letter, coordinated by Corporate Europe Observatory and published on 29 June 2026, was addressed to President von der Leyen and the College of Commissioners.

Brussels, 17 July – The European Commission today unveiled its Electrification Action Plan, proposing a legally binding electrification target, measures to make electricity more competitive than fossil fuels, and new tools to accelerate the shift away from fossil heating. Environmental groups welcomed the plan and called for the power-up momentum to be carried forward and for an ambitious approach to the heating and cooling strategy.

Brussels, 19 July 2026 – The European Commission today tabled its revision of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS), the cornerstone of Europe’s climate policy that is designed to make polluters pay and drive industrial decarbonisation. Rather than reinforcing this critical investment signal at a time of fossil fuel volatility, the proposal weakens key provisions, rewarding polluters while undermining businesses investing in fossil-free production, the EEB warned.
