NEWS Tassoulas offers condolences after deaths of two Air Force officers Greek President Konstantinos Tassoulas expressed his condolences Saturday following the deaths of two Air Force officers whose F-4E Phantom II fighter jet crashed during an air show in Tanagra, north of Athens. “I express my deepest sorrow for the loss of the two officers of the Hellenic Air Force,” Tassoulas said in a statement. He extended his condolences to the families of the pilots and the Air Force.

NEWS Greece schools face more than 10,000 unfilled teaching positions, union says Greece’s secondary schools are starting the new academic year with more than 10,000 teacher vacancies, despite the Education Ministry’s appointment of 29,948 substitute teachers, the country’s secondary teachers’ union said. Andreas Kargopoulos, president of the Federation of Secondary School Teachers of Greece (OLME), said about 46,000 substitute teachers worked last year, while more than 5,000 teachers retired.

One, by public and private sector unions, will march to a square close to the trade exhibition. A second, by pro-communist unionist, began at that square and is directed toward the city’s port.

NEWS Greece declares military mourning after two pilots killed in air show crash Two Greek Air Force pilots were killed Saturday when an F-4E Phantom II fighter jet crashed during the Athens Flying Week air show near Tanagra, north of Athens. The crash occurred at 2:55 p.m., about 3 nautical miles southeast of Tanagra’s military air base. The jet, operated by the Air Force’s 338 Squadron, lost altitude and crashed into farmland in front of spectators.

NEWS Charred body found in car after fire spreads in Attica A charred body was found inside a passenger car Saturday after the vehicle caught fire and the flames spread to nearby woodland in Neos Kouvaras, southeast of Athens. The fire broke out shortly after 5:15 p.m. on Michael Ginis Street and spread from the burning vehicle to the surrounding forest. Firefighters later brought the blaze under control.
