I now have proof that EU representatives are saying something quite different behind the scenes.

British foreign minister Ed Miliband on Tuesday announced plans to ban imports from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. He called Israel’s expulsion of Palestinians from their West Bank lands “ethnic cleansing” and finally accepted the 2024 International Court of Justice ruling that Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip is illegal.

Several initiatives have sprung up to enable Gaza’s widows to provide for their families. Here, a stall in Khan Younis, the southern Gaza Strip, in May, sells knitting and crochet wares made by women who have found themselves their families’ sole breadwinners. A worn-out tent in al-Saraya camp in Gaza City is all that is left Fatima Abu al-Kas, 28, originally from Shujaiya, and her three children, the oldest of which is just 10. Their tent was donated by her late husband’s brother.

Before 2023, our neighborhood was mostly calm. My memories are of breezes in the day and at night; birds singing in the morning; and neighbors’ green backyards.

That was the month when Israel announced the closure of its Dublin embassy. Despite that closure, the Irish government seems to have maintained an open door policy towards Israel’s lobbying network.
