‘Functional Language for Underlying Structure’ was released April 2026 on Patchworks and explores overstimulation, achievement culture and collective burnout through hybrid electronic-acoustic drum performance, tightly sequenced electronics and contributions from Verity Susman (Memorials, Electrelane) on tenor saxophone, Thomas Stone on contrabassoon and Ben Garnett on guitar.

Hi Tom. Tell us about what’s happening in your recording… “This recording was made by pinning a contact microphone to a plant stem in the Colombian Rainforest. I’ve not edited or pitched the sound in any way. The amazing variety of sounds are made by treehopper insects sending vibrational calls to each other through the plant. Amazingly these sounds are not audible at all in the air.

Hi Sejal. Tell us about what’s happening in your recording, ‘Jingrwai Lawbei (The Whistling Names)’… “What you’re hearing is a living tradition from Kongthong in Meghalaya, India where every child receives not only an official name but also a unique whistled name called ‘Jingrwai Iawbei’, composed by their mother. More than a performance, it is a way of expressing love, identity and belonging.

Hi Matthias. Tell us about what’s happening in your recording… “During an expedition in the Arctic Ocean, whilst aboard a zodiac, I had lowered two hydrophones to a depth of around 15 metres. It turned out that there were many bearded seals there, a species emblematic of this part of the world. You can hear them communicating with each other through their very distinctive vocalisations – long, spiralling trills, short sweeping calls and low-frequency moans.

Hi Hee Ju Im. Tell us about what’s happening in your recording… “The recording captures the sound of North Korean broadcasts directed towards South Korea.” What were you thinking and feeling while you recorded it? “Because I couldn’t visually confirm the source of the sound, my initial emotions were fear and dread.

Shadowlands is a new boutique international music festival taking place across four days at the beginning of July 2027 in the historic city of Canterbury in south-east England. ‘ELUSIVE’ The A-side of our latest seven-inch is the dramatic and atmospheric ‘Elusive’, the opening track of ‘Danceteria’, Soft Cell’s forthcoming new studio album. With the sudden death of Dave Ball just two days after he and his creative partner Marc Almond had added their final touches to the record, it will also be the duo’s last. “‘Elusive’ wasn’t originally even going to be on the album,” reveals Marc.
