The EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) is about to set the first concrete rules for textiles in the bloc. As the EU’s flagship framework for “making sustainable products the norm” and reducing carbon and environmental footprints throughout their life cycles, it has the potential to accelerate the transition to a circular economycircular economyA systems solution framework that tackles global challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss, waste, and pollution.

As demand for critical minerals grows and terrestrial reserves become more constrained, attention is increasingly turning to the deep sea, where vast resource deposits lie on the ocean floor. While environmental risks dominate conversations around deep-sea mining, a bigger question remains under-examined — is it actually needed to meet the demand for critical minerals? This is the question that changes the debate.

This paper examines the challenges and opportunities of transforming collection and recycling systems in Brazil’s cities, sets out a shared vision for what these systems could look like by 2040, and identifies the actions needed to get there. It closes with specific calls to action for policymakers, municipalities, businesses, waste picker organisations, financial institutions, and philanthropies.

Joe Murphy has today been appointed CEO of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. He succeeds Jonquil Hackenberg, who joined two years ago to lead the Foundation through a period of transformation and is now stepping down. The Foundation is moving from that period of transformation into the delivery of its strategy.
