Bilateral donors are rethinking funding envelopes and mechanisms, including procurement routes and the implications of widespread co-financing. Implementers and multilaterals are scrambling to diversify and experiment with new funding sizes, types and business models. As bilateral donors face budget cuts and focus more on domestic issues, an opportunity arises for others to step in. Will foundations, private investors and DFIs move in to support and sustain systemic approaches?

The DCED, together with the BEAM Exchange – its knowledge platform on market systems development (MSD), has a track record in running Global Seminars bringing together donors and practitioners to learn about effective practice in private-sector development (PSD). The context for traditional aid and development is rapidly changing with dramatic cuts to aid budgets, shifting aid priorities, widespread fragility, and increasingly unpredictable economic and trade policies globally. Beyond the reduction in financial support through traditional aid channels it is difficult to predict the precise impacts from these changes. There will be winners and losers based on economic sectors and geographies.

The DCED 2025 Annual Meeting will take place in Geneva, Switzerland, 16-19 June, hosted by ITC and ILO. More information will be shared with members by email and posted here as it becomes available.
