On Sept. 9, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Agribusiness confirmed an unvaccinated horse in the Regional Municipality of Durham positive for West Nile virus. The 19-year-old Draft gelding began showing acute neurologic signs on Aug. 25 and was euthanized. An IgM serum test came back positive for WNV. This is Ontario’s third confirmed case of equine WNV in 2026.

The gelding presented with mucopurulent nasal discharge, intermittent cough, fever, and moderate lymphadenopathy without drainage. He is currently recovering. Eight new equine West Nile virus (WNV) cases have been reported to the Equine Disease Communication Center: Montana Beaverhead County, Montana: One horse tested positive. Yellowstone County, Montana: One horse tested positive. Hill County, Montana: One horse tested positive. Wisconsin Brown County, Wisconsin: An unvaccinated 6-year-old Quarter Horse mare tested positive on Sept. 3 and is currently still alive.
