I’ve said this before, but there’s not much you can control about a career in publishing outside of your writing. The words you put on the paper? You can control that. But everything else? The reviews and reception and sales and marketing plans and and and…? All out of your control. In my previous newsletter, I broke down my marketing and promo efforts for Dustborn’s paperback release. (Read it here if you’re interested.) One of my plans included sending copies of the book to influencers.

Dustborn’s paperback releases in exactly four weeks. This will be my first “release” in over two years. I also don’t have any new books on the horizon. There is nothing new for me to ask readers to preorder, add to their goodreads, put on their TBR, etc, and so it really feels like I need to do something for this paperback. Though I don’t intend for it to be my last traditionally published book, I guess it could be. Despite our personal wishes, we authors can never be sure what the future will hold.

In honor of Contagion’s audiobook being on sale in a variety of places (iBooks, libro.fm, Kobo) , I thought it would be fun to share a deleted scene from the novel. “Deleted scene” isn’t quite the right term, because the scene we’re going to look at today still exists in the final book. But this scene evolved so much during drafting and revisions that it’s almost unrecognizable from its original form. Why? Well, Contagion wasn’t always a YA novel. It originally began as adult.
