Domestic violence is a foreseeable workplace risk, affecting survivors’ safety, health, equality and labour market participation. It undermines women’s economic independence and reinforces labour market inequality, trapping survivors in cycles of dependency and insecure work. In accordance with occupational safety and health regulations, employers are required to identify and mitigate these risks as part of workplace safety systems.

Czechia: agreement on minimum wage increase On 24 August, representatives of the Government, trade unions and employers met for an extraordinary plenary session of the tripartite council. The main topic of the meeting was the increase in the minimum wage from 1 January 2027 and the setting of the coefficient for its further growth in 2028.

AI talks @ ETUI Top experts from academia, civil society and online rights organizations, among others, share their insights and knowledge about artificial intelligence, building a 360° view of how AI is disrupting and reshaping the world we live in. Guest speaker: Anna Milanez, OECD Anna Milanez is a labour market economist in the Directorate for Employment, Labour and Social Affairs at the OECD. Her research focuses on the impact of AI technologies on the workplace and the future of work.

Unpaid labour is more than unpaid overtime. It includes the time, costs and emotional effort workers contribute without being fully compensated, from administration, preparation, travel, training and networking to expenses paid out of pocket and the emotional work of managing feelings and behaviour at work.

In an increasingly digitalised world, trade union education is also undergoing a major evolution. To keep pace with changing workplaces and new challenges for unions, workers representatives have an increased need for diverse, accessible and more flexible learning. The European Trade Union Institute gathered, in early July, 14 passionate national trainers in Bilbao for an intensive, forward-thinking, hands-on course on e-learning for trade unionists.

Temperatures in Brussels have, thankfully, dropped from their highs earlier in the summer, but the political temperature is rising again as officials, parliamentarian, lobbyists, think tankers and journalists return, crank up their computers and the Brussels machine picks up speed again. In tune with the heat and climate debate, over the summer the ETUI published the report “Climate change and workers’ health: protecting workers against heat and other climate-related hazards”.

Europe is the fastest-warming continent on Earth, a reality that all kinds of workplaces need to adapt to. Recent survey evidence tells us that around one in five workers in the EU have reported exposure to extreme heat at work, rising to one in three workers in some southern countries. So this begs the question: does the law do enough to ensure adequate worker protection? And what are the costs of inaction?

The Sustainable Welfare and Eco-Social Policy Network will hold its first-ever in-person conference in Brussels from 9-11 September 2026. The event is hosted by the Université libre de Bruxelles and jointly organized by the Network, ULB, the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI), the MERGE project, and the WELRISCC project.
