Lessons of deprivation of individuals' legal status for the future of citizenship
This lecture will shed light on the administrative measure with which the state authorities of the newly established independent Republic of Slovenia in 1992 deprived over 25.000 individuals − residents of Slovenia, originating from other parts of former Yugoslavia − of their permanent residence status, and the lessons learned for the future of citizenship. The meanings of citizenship span from legal definitions of citizenship as a legal status to sociological notions of belonging and inclusion.
Camille Portier on mentorship and community in the Max Weber Programme
When you were in the Max Weber Programme, what was your research on? I mostly work on gender in the labour market. That's what I did for my dissertation, and I continued to do it here. I look at the consequences of motherhood on women's careers and labour force attachment and how that matters for gender inequality. I also look at wage inequality between men and women. How identity affects asylum decisions, with Esteban Scuzarello
Esteban's research was shaped by an experience during his Master's at the Florence School of Transnational Governance, where fieldwork took him to a refugee camp on the border between Tijuana and the United States. Those months, he says, gave him the inspiration for the work he does today, and led him back to the EUI as a PhD researcher. At the EUI Department of Political and Social Sciences, Esteban studies asylum in Latin America, and specifically how identity shapes the process.
