I have come to the conclusion that The Friedkin Group have not recognised the strength of the culture at Everton. I have often beaten the well-worn path of listing its norms and their effect on Everton's progress, and how it has defeated repeated managers and anyone who tried to effect change, even myself. This is the fundamental distinction that TFG have missed: the difference between dysfunction and culture.

Everton have reacted with anger at the decision by a Premier League commission to order the club to pay compensation to Burnley in relation to Profitability and Sustainability Rules breaches in 2022. Everton were found guilty in the autumn of 2023 of breaking the league's spending rules and were initially deducted 10 points by a Premier League panel, although that ruling was later reduced to six points on appeal.

While the future of Iliman Ndiaye and rumours of a move by Everton for Aaron Wan-Bissaka have dominated transfer-related online chat in recent days, the first concrete piece of news in the realm of recruitment and squad retention came this week with confirmation that Vitalii Mykolenko has signed a new three-year contact with the club.

70 years ago, the Toffees were in the middle of a post-season tour which had only been bettered for ambition by the 1909 voyage to Argentina and Uruguay. The May to June 1956 tour would be in the USA and Canada, encompassing a series of exhibition matches against local, German and Scottish opposition, to help raise the profile of soccer in the continent, and swell the Blues’ coffers.

First in the Premier League for successful tackles (120), at least 10 more than any other Premier League player; first for interceptions (59); second for ground duels won (179); in the 97th percentile for defensive contributions; in the 93rd percentile for defensive recoveries; and in the 100th percentile for clearances.

Another season has passed like the darkness before dawn. The overriding feeling, I guess, is one of relief coupled with a slightly scary feeling of deja vu .For those of us of a certain age (I'm 64) the feeling is one of uncomfortable familiarity — hope dashed with a seasonal helping of piss on chips. The question, I suppose, for every Evertonian far and wide is, when will the Head and Shoulders (rinse and repeat) cycle end?
