EWU’s Performing Arts Department and the Spokane Public Library recently launched an Emerging Artists Program to help talented artists gain attention and get a jump-start on their careers. The program provides six-month residencies for two recent graduates from the Bachelor of Fine Arts’ Studio Art Program inside The Hive®. The Hive® is a non-traditional library focused on arts education, and free public event space, located at 2904 E. Sprague Ave.

The Eastern Washington University community was saddened to learn that John Douglas passed away on May 26, 2023. Douglas served as a professor in the Chemistry Department and as vice provost for Graduate Studies and Research. Douglas began his career at EWU in September of 1960 and retired in July of 1991 after 31 years of service. We offer our condolences to the Douglas family and our gratitude for his years of service.

A group of hard-working student organizers brought a spirited gathering, once halted by the pandemic, back to its full, in-person glory. The powwow engaged people of all ages, who enjoyed the return of this spiritual celebration. “Everyone enjoyed it, especially the little ones,” said Laughing Eyes (Daniel Mansulla), a 22-year-old exercise science major from Taos Pueblo, New Mexico.

Sheila Woodward, a professor of music education at EWU, was recently named president of the International Music Council in Morocco at the group’s general assembly, held on Nov. 22. The IMC is the world’s largest network of music organizations, with more than 600 million associated individuals. Its primary focus, Woodward says, is to act as an advocate for artists’ right to engage in musical activities.

November 30, 2023 By David Meany No-Li Brewhouse and Eastern Washington University were recently awarded an international bronze brewing medal at the Asia International Beer Competition (AIBC) in Singapore. This is the “first-ever” international brewing medal achieved by an American university or college and a brewery. The beer is proudly named, E Dubbel U, in honor of the EWU Eagle mascot and is a double Belgium ale.

Travis Masingale, an associate professor of design at EWU, took the stage in New York City to serve on a panel at the 2023 AIGA Design Conference, one of the nation’s most prominent annual meetings of design professionals. Masingale was selected to speak as a part of a diversity and inclusion-focused design panel. He was one of about 30 people chosen from a pool of 113 applicants.

Alex Moomaw found his path to cybersecurity at Eastern. Moomaw, a 25-year-old from Omak, Washington, is one quarter away from completing a bachelor’s degree in computer science and a little over a year from finishing his bachelor’s in cybersecurity operations. After graduating, he will enter a high-demand profession that protects key sectors, including health care, government and banking, from cyberattacks. Moomaw has loved computers since he was a teenager.
