Search ArticlesMr. Karp Roars, But Is Anyone Listening?
I came across this clip that Katherine Boyle, a16z’s American Dynamism visionary, shared on Twitter. The tweet contains a short clip of Palantir co-founder and CEO Alexander Karp speaking at the Reagan National Defense Forum a few weeks ago. Click on the picture of the tweet to watch the whole clip before reading the rest of the article. The one thing I love about Silicon Valley elites is that they say the quiet part out loud. They give the game away transparently for all to see.
Startup Spotlight #220: Sorce
Oluwapelumi Dada, David Alade, and Dan Ajayi started Sorce to make applying to jobs less painful and more delightful. So far, there have been more than 2M swypes on the app, and people have gotten interviews at companies like SpaceX, Twitch, MongoDB, Jane Street, Mercury, Scale AI, Bubble.io, etc. Problem: Applying for jobs is hard and repetitive. Market: Everyone needs a job, and every company needs employees. Solution: Tinder for Jobs.
A (Brief) Update And A Decision
Hello Founders, I hope everyone is doing well today! It’s been a while, and I’d like to explain my absence and where the content is. I’ve been busy slogging through the fall semester of my EC year at HBS. It’s overall just as busy as RC year, but I’m spending my time mostly where I want to with classes, social life, and professional pursuits. Overall, I’m pretty happy with how things went.
Startup Spotlight #219: lume
Katie Kirsch is a product, design, and startup leader based in NY, with an engineering degree from Stanford and an MBA from Harvard Business School. She’s the Founder and CEO of lume, a 1:1 coaching membership for achieving your professional goals without sacrificing your health. Katie's work has been featured in Forbes 30 Under 30 (2024), Fast Company, and more. She has also taught at Stanford's d.school and Harvard's Graduate School of Education.

Startup Spotlight #218: Sumtive
Ricardo is a recent economics graduate from University College London who is passionate about software. Martin is a mathematics graduate from the University of Edinburgh who is passionate about real-world statistical modeling. We founded Sumtive in early 2024 to reinvent discounts through large language models. Problem: Everyone’s fundamentally different - so why should our prices be the same? Shops are losing revenue by not offering better discounts to price-sensitive shoppers.
Housekeeping + A Personal Note
Author’s Note: This will be the last personal story I’ll share on the newsletter. I want to keep things strictly professional going forward. I hope you understand. Hi Founders, I hope you all are well. I have a couple of housekeeping items. First, the older versions of the Case Studies are free starting October 1st. And that includes the newer version I did with Jason Alvarez-Cohen lately. All Case Studies afterward will be for paid subscribers only. Exciting, I know! I hope you enjoy the content.
Startup Spotlight #217: Paradigm Robotics
Siddharth Thakur is a serial founder, researcher, roboticist, and innovator. He is the founder and CEO of Paradigm Robotics, a company building advanced robotics solutions to protect first responders in the most hazardous environments. Before founding Paradigm, he co-founded and served as the CTO of Gazelle Ecosolutions, a climate-tech startup developing geospatial data platforms that enable remote sensing for customers worldwide.
Startup Spotlight #216: Tandem
Tandem empowers startup employees to do and feel their best at work, through mentorship and coaching. Connie is the Founder and CEO of Tandem. She is a former teacher, second-time founder, and graduate from MIT and Stanford MBA. Problem: The average startup employee’s tenure is two times shorter than in any other industry, and it costs a company 2x the employee's salary to find a replacement.
The Best Answer You Can Hear From A VC Is Not "Yes"
Author’s Note: I'm sorry for the delay in this article. It’s been a long week of work related to General Catalyst Venture Fellows and my first full week of school back at HBS! This is probably one of the most counterintuitive columns I’ve ever written. If you’re at the early stages of your startup, when you’re fundraising and receiving decisions from investors… …it’s better to hear a “No” than a “Yes.” Yes, you read that right.
