Fais Pas Genre

Blog
Since this webzine exists, that is to say since 2009, we defend tooth and nail that it is not absurd or unwelcome for a site claiming to be a defender of genre(s) cinema to approach its editorial line avoiding divisions and niches. For the argument, it should perhaps be remembered that the spirit and ambition through Fais pas Genre! is for us to explore the seventh art in its most total diversity, in search of what seems to us to suit our criteria and expectations, the same in short as those sought by the critics of the magazine that serves as our model, of reference and inspiration, the one to which we like to claim the heirs with all the pretension and the patter that characterizes us: Midi Minuit Fantastique. In its number 7 published in September 1963, the editor-in-chief and creator of the review, Michel Caen, who came to talk to Riccardo Freda himself, was directly addressed by this monument of fantastic cinema who asked him to explain why the review only interested in fantastic cinema and not in the rest of film production? To this question, Caen gave an answer that we try to use here as a manifesto and as a reason for existing: "We have to agree, our definition of the fantastic is very broad: from melodrama to vampire films, passing by dreamlike films, in short, anything that comes out of the routine”. Our quest, it seems to us, is the same as that of the midi-minuists :ardently surveying this mountain that is film production, without barriers, prejudices, borders, searching its rivers in search of the nugget of gold, of what " gets out of the routine" , or in a word if necessary , in search of a certain fantasy. This same fantasy that sometimes allows us to forget the world we live in or other times, to educate us, help us to understand it better and to understand ourselves better. It is for this reason that Fais pas Genre!wishes to defend a cinema of genre(s), in the plural, a space on the web where we would deal with cheeky films as well as cheeky films, rarities, forgotten films and nuggets, memories of our childhood, unreleased films, chefs- disavowed works and popular cinema shunned by critics: in addition, cinema from B to Z.
