Can we just have Williams write Wonder Woman ongoing? The way she taps into Diana’s true nature and soul is unmatched. The voyage into the unknown allows Steve Trevor to have some caring time with his daughter. Their banter is lighter considering the circumstances. It allows Trevor to break into a needed story of hope and destiny. Retelling Diana’s origin through his eyes provides a unique perspective with an impactful fallout.
SUPER MONDO MEGA MUTTS #1 (ONI PRESS)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING *** Pires swings for the fences and connects for a monster win here. The premise is as advertised. After a heart-wrenching opening with Wolf’s origin, the story shows how this all came to be. Once events fast forward to present time, the brick is thrown on the gas pedal and never taken off. Chromedome and the Goo Gang make a bold statement to the readers. If anyone is thinking this is “Saturday Morning safe”, think again.
Avengers: Armageddon #2 (Marvel Comics)
What a tangled web we have here. Ross’s invasion of Symkaria leads to nothing but anarchy. The writing shows his blind rage as his forces start tearing into the country. Once Stark’s forces arrive, events escalate quickly. This allows Stark’s secret weapon to take over events. David Colton is a wild card. The writing shows him playing by his own rules. Even facing Ross, his actions never mesh with the other heroes. With a power level he possesses, this doesn’t end well for anyone.
Dungeon Crawler Carl Special Edition #0 (VAULT COMICS)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING *** The story is very deceptive in delivery. Carl’s counting backwards form the “end of the world”. It sets a horror tone with a severed head falling at his feat. This spins into more flashbacks and he sits around his ex-girlfriend’s boxes. The writing establishes his way of coping with the break-up while preparing for the uncertain times ahead. Once flashes start appearing the mood changes quickly. Readers see the shock of losing an entire city.
THE DARKNESS #6 (TOP COW/IMAGE COMICS)
Well guys, I am absolutely loving this Darkness reboot/reimagining that is coming out from Top Cow and Image Comics. Just top tier stuff. This and Witchblade, along with stuff like Rob Liefeld's reintroduction of Youngblood, are just bringing back awesome comics from back in the day and just giving you what you loved, which is awesome art, awesome story, awesome characters. No frills, no nonsense, just hit the ground running, having your face blown off by awesome comics.
TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: THE LAST RONIN – TRAINING DAY #1 (IDW Publishing)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING *** As Casey Marie starts training a new batch of Ninja Turtles in the methods of Master Splinter. Her mother, April O’Neil-Jones, sits back and remembers when Casey was trained by Michaelangelo and even sees the parallels in the training method. We then go back to Casey’s training, and the hard times she gave Mikey. She didn’t start off as the star student, more like the pain in the ass one.
NEW TITANS #37 (DC Comics)
Brombal lets Red Devil take the spotlight for the opening pages. Readers see a brief origin story play out as he confronts a demon from his past….literally. Nebiros manipulating the town provides enough of a challenge for the upstart squad. The writing shows them trying to assess the situation while one member plays the “fish out of water” comedic role. Eva’s portion of the issue breaks up much of the drama in key places. Where the story finds its’ groove centers around its’ longtime leader.
SHREDDER #10 (IDW Publishing)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING *** After saving the leader of the Dog Star Clan Yoshi Chen, Shredder and Hoshimi take refuge in a Dog Star Clan Temple. This will allow Shredder to face off internally with the alien parasite known as the Vreen, as Hoshimi protects him from outside threats. Those threats come quickly as the remaining Dog Star Clan members show up at the Temple and try and kill the Shredder. Hoshimi keeps her promise and fights off the clan to protect Shredder.
END OF LIFE #6 (DC COMICS)
Starks delivers another incredible read with this latest installment. Eddie’s been thrown out of his dad’s house. Rooming with Trent and Leona provides a hysterical clash of lifestyles and commentary. This segways to Smiley behind bars. Readers watch as the introduction of Neils comes off as insane as every other hitman brought in thus far. Their talk is off the charts, fitting for such a loose cannon like Smiley. The story does dip into more serious tones at points.
SMILE: FOR THE CAMERA #5 (IDW DARK)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING *** The French Police have questions for Ivy after Noa’s apparent suicide. But unfortunately for Ivy the cops and their questioning is the least of her worries. She now is starting to see the crazy things the others saw before their untimely deaths. As she returns to New York, she barely knows what is real or what is in her head. However, this won’t stop her from trying exposing Purple and Perry. But even this becomes harder than it should be.
