Lurraine Elizabeth “Rainey” Schmidt, 77, of Fayetteville, passed away peacefully on Aug. 23, 2026, in Fayetteville. A memorial service will be held in the near future honoring her life that was marked by faith, kindness, and steadfast devotion to the people she loved and the Lord she served. She was born Feb. 22, 1949, in Robstown, the daughter of Marguerite and Lex Sutton Sr. She was a woman whose life testified to the quiet power of a faithful heart.

The Fayette County Historical Commission and The Randolph High School Alumni Association are dedicating the new Randolph School historical marker at 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 5th at 653 East Pearl Street in La Grange. This is currently the site of the Randolph Recreation Center owned and operated by the City of La Grange. African American students attended school at this site from 1903 to 1965 when local schools were integrated.

A strong thunderstorm swept over parts of Fayette County Friday afternoon. The storm downed trees in La Grange and knocked out power in La Grange and the rural areas south of the city. A major outage left more than 1,000 Fayette Electric Cooperative (FEC) customers without power starting around 5:30 p.m. That outage originated in the Riverside Substation and lasted nearly two hours. FEC reported additional outages northeast of Flatonia and south of Schulenburg.

Hermann Sons Rutersville Meeting Hermann Sons Rutersville will hold their September membership meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 2 beginning at 7 p.m. at the Rutersville Lodge. Wit Hatton, Winchester Area Civic Association scholarship recipient this past summer, graduated with honors from St. Domenic Savio Catholic High School in Austin in May. He is the son of Tad Hatton and Matt and Jennifer Harper, and grandson of Charles Lehmann of Winchester. He is attending Texas A&M University this fall to study mechanical engineering. Fair Plant Exhibit Winchester gardeners and nature lovers are invited to enter their prize plants in this year’s Labor Day weekend fair.

As part of the ongoing America 250 celebrations across this area, all Fayette County Veterans are being celebrated as honorary Parade Marshals, along with Fayette County Judge Dan Mueller, for this year’s Fayette County Fair Parade which begins Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in downtown La Grange. All local veterans from all military branches are invited to participate in the parade. Fayette County has a long and proud history of military service.

To the editor: I want to start by saying that I am disgusted by how people chose to interpret my story/letter in last week’s newspapers. I do not support the release of those men who committed such an atrocious crime. I applaud the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department for their work in bringing justice to the memory of Viviana. I have never and will never have anything against local law enforcement.

Kudos to Cindy Wingo’s concise and truthful Letter to the Editor. A lot was said that did not take up half a page.

Disaster Training in Schulenburg United Evangelical Lutheran Church, located at 2038 FM 3171, Schulenburg, will host a Disaster Response Preparedness Training Saturday, Aug. 29 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. A light lunch will be provided. For everyone this is very practical basic training. Topics covered will be: What is the definition of a disaster? Family Preparedness: is your home ready? Congregational Preparedness: how prepared is your building and your members? There will be plenty of time for Q&A.
