A new initiative from FEBS Open Bio will give early career researchers the opportunity to develop their peer-review skills through training, mentoring and hands-on reviewing experience. Peer review is a fundamental part of scientific publishing, but gaining experience as a reviewer can be difficult at the beginning of a research career. The FEBS Open Bio Early Career Reviewer Hub has been created to help bridge that gap.

Do you have an idea for an activity that could bring molecular life sciences closer to the public? FEBS can help make it happen. A new call for FEBS Supported Science and Society Events is now open, offering financial support to FEBS Constituent Societies to organize activities that increase public understanding of molecular life sciences. The call supports events taking place between January and June 2027.

The second 2026 call for FEBS Education and Training Supported Society Events opens on 15 September 2026, offering funding to support educational activities organized by FEBS Constituent Societies. The call is open to events taking place between January and June 2027 and aims to support activities that contribute to education and training across the molecular life sciences community. Funding of up to €2,500 is available for in-person events, while online events can receive up to €750 in support.

The Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) is thrilled to announce the FEBS Research Academy, a prestigious body which will advance FEBS initiatives to foster scientific excellence and innovation, support the next generation of researchers, and strengthen the international voice of science.

FEBS Short-Term Fellowships support scientific collaboration, advanced training and access to techniques not available at the applicant’s home institution, with a particular emphasis on fostering new collaborations between laboratories within the FEBS area. From 2027, the FEBS Short-Term Fellowships programme will move from a rolling application system to two annual calls.

EMBO and FEBS announce Eleftheria Zeggini as the recipient of the 2027 FEBS | EMBO Women in Science Award, which celebrates its 20th edition this year. Zeggini is recognised for her pioneering contributions to human genomics and the translation of large-scale genetic discoveries into biological and clinical insight, alongside her leadership in equality and inclusion in science.

It is with profound sadness that we mourn the passing of Professor Ada Yonath, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry and Israel Prize recipient. A visionary pioneer in structural biology, Prof. Yonath leaves behind an indelible mark on global science, remembered not only for her landmark breakthroughs but for her extraordinary courage and perseverance in advancing the boundaries of human knowledge. FEBS awards four medals for outstanding achievements in biochemistry and molecular biology or related sciences to distinguished senior scientists active in European research – the Sir Hans Krebs medal (since 1968), the Datta medal (since 1986), the Theodor Bücher medal (since 1999), and the FEBS Rita Levi-Montalcini medal (since 2026) – with the awardees delivering key plenary lectures at the FEBS Congress.

On this year’s World Cancer Day, the team of Molecular Oncology launched a writing competition entitled “Intercepting cancer before it begins: A 2050 perspective” inviting contributions exploring how advances in science, medicine, technology, and public health could transform cancer prevention by the year 2050. The 2026 FEBS Congress highlighted the value of international scientific collaboration through a series of activities jointly organised by FEBS and the Korean Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (KSBMB). Building on the partnership established last year, FEBS and KSBMB came together in Maastricht to promote scientific exchange and strengthen connections between European and Asian researchers.
