WASHINGTON, D.C. — Dr. John Howard has been reappointed to another six-year term as director of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and administrator of the World Trade Center Health Program. Howard’s reappointment comes days before the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and continues his leadership of a federal program that provides medical monitoring and treatment to more than 140,000 9/11 responders and survivors nationwide.

For a growing share of today’s firefighters, Sept. 11, 2001, is history rather than memory. They know the images, the number 343 and the words “Never Forget,” but they did not experience the confusion, grief and sense of national unity that followed the attacks. We asked the FireRescue1 audience what they want younger generations of firefighters to understand about that day. Their responses focused on loss, service, readiness and a toll that persists 25 years later.

For decades, the basic configuration of structural firefighting protective clothing has been remarkably consistent. A coat and pants — each built around an outer shell, moisture barrier and thermal barrier — are worn with a hood, helmet, gloves, footwear and SCBA to create the familiar structural firefighting ensemble. That system has been refined repeatedly, and it has unquestionably provided firefighters with protection that earlier generations did not have.

September 11, 2001. I remember everything about that day. I wasn’t a firefighter at the time, but I remember watching the coverage from my high school, and seeing fire company after fire company entering the World Trade Center, walking across the debris after the towers fell and raising the flag over the rubble. Over the past 25 years, we’ve faced other historic incidents, although none on par with 9/11 — and the threat remains present.
