NEW YORK (AP) — The Broadway rom-com “Maybe Happy Ending” isn't in a very happy place these days. A casting controversy threatens to dampen the show's post-Tony Award-winning glow. The strife began when producers of the South Korea-based musical chose to cast Andrew Barth Feldman as the male lead when original star Darren Criss steps away, in effect replacing an Asian actor with a white one.

More companies are recalling tens of thousands of packages of imported shrimp sold at Walmart, Kroger and other U.S. stores because they may contain radioactive contamination, according to federal notices. AquaStar USA Corp. of Seattle is recalling more than 26,000 packages of refrigerated cocktail shrimp sold at Walmart stores in 27 states between July 31 and Aug. 16.

TORONTO — Education experts and advocates are questioning Ontario's already delayed plan to introduce a financial literacy requirement for high school students as part of the Grade 10 math course, with some saying the approach may actually discourage teens' interest in personal finances. The requirement set to come into effect this September has been postponed until next year, along with several other curriculum changes.

A case that could provide the Trump administration with new and expansive power over the traditionally independent Federal Reserve focused Friday on what would constitute “cause” to remove a high-ranking official at the nation's central bank. Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook has requested an emergency injunction to block President Donald Trump's attempt to fire her over allegations that she committed mortgage fraud when she purchased a home and condo in 2021.

OTTAWA — Canada's economy contracted in the second quarter as U.S. tariffs and trade uncertainty tanked Canadian exports. But few economists are raising the alarm about Canada possibly being in a recession, and not all forecasters are convinced the economic weakness will push the Bank of Canada to cut interest rates next month.

CALGARY — Police have charged a man with three counts of aggravated assault for stabbings at the Calgary Stampede last month. Police say they identified the 18-year-old following an extensive investigation that included witness interviews and camera footage. Officers executed a search warrant of the suspect's house and seized a folding knife and clothing they say believe are consistent with the stabbings. The man is scheduled to appear in court next week.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A federal appeals court on Friday blocked the Trump administration’s plans to end protections for 600,000 people from Venezuela who have had permission to live and work in the United States. A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower court ruling that maintained temporary protected status for Venezuelans while the case proceeded through court. An email to the Department of Homeland Security for comment was not immediately returned.

OTTAWA — Ottawa's one-stop shop for industry to pitch plans for large industrial construction projects will be headquartered in Calgary. The Prime Minister's Office provided details today about the major projects office which is part of its plan to get big national projects fast-tracked through the approval process. The office will be headed up by former Trans Mountain CEO Dawn Farrell. The Liberal government rushed Bill C-5 through Parliament in June.

TORONTO — It's TIFF's 50th edition — TIFFty feels like something of a missed branding opportunity — and the event once known as the Festival of Festivals is going big. More than 200 features are scheduled to screen between Sept. 4 and 14. The Canadian Press' arts and entertainment team has picked out 10 buzzy films hitting the festival, from celeb-driven Netflix fare, to European avant-garde, to a couple of well-known actors' first foray into filmmaking.

MONTREAL — Montreal's transit agency says city buses won't be able to flash the “Go! Canadiens Go!” NHL hockey slogan any time soon. The agency had removed the expression from electronic signs on buses and replaced it with "Allez! Canadiens Allez!" to appease the province's language watchdog. Following outcry, the language office said it gave the transit agency the green light in June to use the English word “go” on display signs to cheer on the city's NHL team.
