Flame for Thought

Connor Zary is one of the most interesting players on the Calgary Flames roster, but this summer, it's safe to say that General Manager Craig Conroy and the front office have a massive decision to make on the young forward.

The Calgary Flames have arguably their best and deepest prospect pool in recent memory, and after nine picks in the 2026 NHL Draft, this is an organization whose future is truly starting to take shape. Last season, we saw the full-time arrival of Matvei Gridin, Hunter Brzustewicz and Zayne Parekh, and with the likes of Dustin Wolf and Matt Coronato already on the roster, this young core is starting to take shape.

The Calgary Flames have only just accepted their rebuild, but after moving plenty of veterans over the past 2-3 years, their roster is shaping up as one that has plenty of potential for years to come. However, that means there's going to be plenty of pain in the short-term, and while there's going to be plenty to watch in 2026/27 (Zayne Parekh, Matvei Gridin, the potential full-time arrival of players like Samuel Honzek and Aydar Suniev), there's going to be plenty of pain as well.

The World Juniors tournament has always been one to watch for fans of NHL teams, as it gives them an opportunity to see some of their top prospects in action against very stiff competition. For a Calgary Flames organization that has transformed their prospect pool over the past three years, the 2027 event is set to be one of the most exciting in history, with the team expected to have many of their best prospects feature at the event.

For years following the departure of Jarome Iginla, the Calgary Flames were led by Mark Giordano for eight seasons, and in that time, he solidified himself as one of, if not the greatest defenseman in the history of the franchise. He has long since departed however, as he was selected by the Seattle Kraken in their original expansion draft, and after that, he became a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs, retiring with his hometown team.

The growth of college hockey in the past few years has been a great thing for the sport, and with so many prospect opting to head to the NCAA instead of making the jump right to the NHL or staying in the CHL/USHL, it continues to grow and grow. For the Calgary Flames, it's a huge helper in developing their prospects, with over 10 of the Flames top prospects set to play at the college level over the next few years.

The 2026 NHL Draft is less than two weeks old, and while the future begins to look brighter for the Calgary Flames following a deep, talented draft class, for the scouting department, the march to 2027 begins immediately. While the 2026/27 season is still a few months away, the belief is that this Flames team with very limited skill and few standout players will struggle through the year, and with lottery luck, they have the opportunity to land the No. 1 pick for the first time in history.

It's still only summer, with the 2026/27 hockey season still months away, but when things get going, the massive games and big time tournaments will get started rather quickly. Perhaps the most important for the future of the Calgary Flames will be the 2027 World Juniors, hosted by Edmonton and Red Deer, and with a growing prospect pool, there will be a strong presence for Flames at the tournament.

For years, the Calgary Flames tried to battle mediocrity, with many fans becoming all too familiar with the mindset of simply getting into the Stanley Cup Playoffs where anything can happen. Under Brad Treliving, that was often the mindset, and after missing out on the post-season in several straight years, the team pivoted to Craig Conroy as the General Manager, a move that has transformed the franchise.

The Calgary Flames made a move earlier in the off-season to acquire defenseman Simon Nemec in a deal with the New Jersey Devils, giving up significant draft capital in the process. While there was criticism of the move, given that he is still just 22-years-old and was once a No. 2 overall pick in the NHL Draft, it's clear why the Flames would want to add the right-shot defenseman.
