Fleet managers are constantly looking for solutions that support better routing, enhanced telematics, improved forecasting, or more granular visibility. While the tooling is important, the most immediate source of capacity for many supply chain and transportation leaders is not a new platform or a larger fleet.

The 100-car Naturalistic Driving Study was the first of its kind and carefully constructed to be as natural as possible for participants. Most of the drivers were behind the wheels of their own cars. The result was nearly 42,300 hours of data covering approximately 2,000,000 miles of driving by 241 drivers, of which 109 were considered primary drivers.

Waymo’s driverless cars are involved in fewer crashes than human drivers, but the federal system for monitoring automated vehicles needs improvement, a new study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety shows. Per vehicle mile traveled (VMT), Waymo’s driverless vehicles deployed in San Francisco, Phoenix, Los Angeles and Austin were involved in 68% fewer crashes than human drivers, researchers found.

Most fleets have access to telematics data, but many still struggle to turn that information into measurable safety improvements. Without consistent reporting and meaningful performance metrics, it’s difficult to identify trends, build trust in the data, and focus improvement efforts where they’ll have the greatest impact.
