New Zealand (NZ) Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Winston Peters will conclude his 2-day-visit to India today. The DPM met with External Affairs Minister Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and is scheduled to visit Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare JP Nadda today. Peters’ visit is part of a broader diplomatic outreach from NZ, to engage with regional democratic partners and enhance trade, with stopovers in Australia and Sri Lanka prior to this trip.
US Secretary of Defense Hegseth to speak at Shangri-la Dialogue
Today, defense officials from 47 countries will convene for a security forum to discuss the geopolitical landscape of the Indo-Pacific. Over the weekend, delegations will discuss the escalating tensions between the U.S. and China, particularly over Taiwan and increased militarization in the South China Sea. In his opening speech tomorrow, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth will convey the Trump administration’s defense policy and vision for the Indo-Pacific region.
EU to end trade visa-free regime with Ukraine
The European Union has decided not to renew the full suspension of trade duties and quotas for Ukrainian goods, effectively ending the temporary trade visa-free regime enacted in response to Russia’s invasion in 2022. The measure, initially introduced to support Ukraine’s economy, allowed tariff-free access for most Ukrainian exports to the EU.
Inaugural Central Asia-Italy summit to begin in Astana
Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev is hosting the inaugural Central Asia-Italy summit in Astana today. The summit will bring Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni together with the leaders of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Kazakh-Italian trade has laid the groundwork for this meeting: Italy is Kazakhstan’s third largest trading partner behind China and Russia.
US military to begin removing transgender soldiers
The United States military is expected to begin removing transgender service members from its ranks today. Based on an executive order signed by President Trump, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth set a June 6 deadline for transgender individuals to voluntarily leave active-duty military service. After today, the military will begin “involuntary separations” for those who have not left service voluntarily.
Armenian president expected to visit Türkiye
Armenian Prime Minister (PM) Nikol Pashinyan will visit Türkiye today. Pashinyan’s historic visit comes at the invitation of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who’s sought to normalise relations with Armenia whilst keeping traditional ally Azerbaijan close. Armenia and Azerbaijan have fought several wars, most recently in 2023, where Armenian exclave Nagorno-Karabakh was annexed by Azerbaijan.
EU to Present Report on Israeli Human Rights Violations
The European External Action Service will present its findings on alleged human rights violations by Israel at the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting on June 23. The investigation was launched in response to calls from multiple EU members to reconsider Israel’s preferential trade status with the bloc, in light of its actions during the conflict in Gaza.
UN Ocean Conference concludes in France
In Nice, France, the third UN Ocean Conference will conclude after a week of multilateral meetings between world leaders and scientists. The ratification of the High Seas Treaty, an initiative to preserve maritime ecosystems, remains the focal point of this week’s conference. The first-of-its-kind agreement will classify 30% of international waters as marine protected areas by 2030. The agenda includes addressing further issues such as plastic pollution, over-fishing, and bottom trawling.
Financial Action Task Force to meet
The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) will convene for its summer plenary session from June 12 to June 13 in Strasbourg, France. Since its establishment in 1989, the FATF has been the global standard-setter for combating money laundering and terrorist finance. The FATF performs technical evaluations of countries’ financial systems and advises the private sector on which jurisdictions have serious deficiencies in their anti-money laundering (AML) frameworks.
Turkiye commission to begin drafting new constitution
A commission of legal experts from Turkiye’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) will begin drafting a new constitution beginning on June 4. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan appointed the commission last week, arguing that Turkiye’s constitution was outdated and in need of reform. Constitutional reform comes amidst fears that Erdogan is continuing to consolidate power. Erdogan has served as president since 2014, and before that served as the prime minister for ten years.
