On most mornings at the Emergency Shelter of Northern Kentucky in Covington, the day begins the same way: people leaving for work. Some head to warehouse shifts near the airport. Others to restaurants, hospitals, retail stores, or construction sites across Northern Kentucky. They grab coffee, say goodbye, and head out for the day like anyone else. What makes their situation different is that when their shifts end, they return to a shelter.

Rep. Analilia Mejia knew when she joined Congress in April that she wanted to use her post to highlight what she believes is an existential threat to everyday freedoms: attempts to erode and redefine the 14th Amendment. Before winning her New Jersey special election, Mejia had authored articles about how the Reconstruction-era amendment underpins everything from the right to vote to birthright citizenship.

I was not surprised that Donald Trump went after birthright citizenship – the Constitutional guarantee that makes anyone born in this country automatically a citizen of this country. After all, Trump is a die-hard racist, and wants all the brown people out of the U.S. – including those who are citizens. But what surprised me, frankly, was that Republicans both in DC and in Frankfort supported getting rid of that guarantee as well.
