Wildfire risk reduction and fibre procurement research trials are ongoing within the Forest Operations Resilience Vertical. The team worked alongside Carrier Lumber Ltd. in Prince George, BC, on a commercial thinning trial assuming different fibre market availabilities, including a baseline sawlog and pulp scenario, a sawlog only scenario, a sawlog, pulp, and biomass scenario, and a sawlog and biolog scenario, where pulp was hauled as biomass to be chipped.
Golden Paw Award
Mithun Shetty, a senior researcher in transportation, was recently awarded the ‘Golden Paw’ by Kodiak AI. Kodiak AI is one of our partners in the transport sector. Nam Lai, Kodiak AI’s Senior Technical Program Manager, explains: “At Kodiak, the culture we try hardest to protect is a simple one: safety before everything, the team before the individual, and doing the work properly rather than quickly. One of the ways we live that is a small tradition called the ‘Golden Paw’.
Smarter Wood Construction = Safer Buildings. Ask us why our monitoring program is changing the timber game.
FPInnovations has been monitoring wood-based buildings over a decade and developed the building monitoring platform (including hardware, software, and dashboard) with the goal to better understand the performance of these buildings. We can track wood moisture content, relative humidity, air temperature, wall shortening, and building vibration from construction into occupancy.
Catalytic oxidation of white liquor for improved oxygen delignification
The primary benefit of oxygen delignification compared to kraft pulping is the more selective removal of 30-65wt% of the lignin still present in brownstock pulp. Partially-oxidized white liquor (P-OWL) is preferred over caustic as the alkali source in oxygen delignification in order to better control mill sodium/sulphur balance and white liquor inventories. Despite the many advantages of P-OWL vs.
FPInnovations Appoints Mathieu Blouin President and CEO
FPInnovations announces the appointment of Mathieu Blouin as President and CEO effective as of July 13, 2026, as part of a planned transition. He brings over 20 years of experience in applied forest research, fostering industry partnerships, and organizational leadership; most recently serving as Vice President. “Industrial research and innovation have never been more important.
Forest Seeding by Drone: FPInnovations Paves the Way for a New Approach to Reforestation
In the wake of wildfires, bringing affected areas back into production poses a major challenge, particularly in remote or hard-to-reach areas. In Canada, wildfires affect an average of 2.8 million hectares of forest each year, underscoring the importance of exploring innovative solutions to support restoration efforts.
Data Analysis as a Decision-Making Tool in the Pulp and Paper Industry.
Rotary kilns are a key unit operation for the process industries where rapid energy exchange is required into a solid medium. In the pulp and paper industry, lime kilns are used to decompose calcium carbonate into lime and carbon dioxide. While this carbon dioxide is considered biogenic, a significant amount of CO2 is generated from the combustion of fossil fuels as the source of energy.
Automated measuring
FPInnovations, in collaboration with government scalers and industry members, is designing an automated log scaling system. Over the past few months, a team built a visible-light camera system to scan logs and populate a 3D image of each. In British Columbia and Quebec, logs of various species, sourced from different sawmills, have been successfully scanned. These logs were also measured by certified log scalers from British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec.

Database for designing, modeling, and analyzing timber structures
Computer modelling is increasingly essential for mid‑ and high‑rise timber buildings, long‑span structures, and advanced timber systems—applications where traditional hand calculations are no longer sufficient. Yet many engineers and researchers still lack clear guidance and reliable input data for modelling mass timber structures, and existing software tools often fall short for complex or hybrid systems.
