CPD Anaesthesia is an educational journal aimed at reflecting best current practice and ensuring that practitioners are kept up to date with developments in Anaesthesia and critical care. CPD Anaesthesia publishes articles of an educational nature and not research. The contents of each issue fall into 3 main categories. First the journal starts with educational articles, summarising topical areas of practice, in particular where recent advances have been made. The second part of the journal comprises regular educational articles in specific areas, for example equipment reviews, practical procedures and updates on ethics. Finally the journal has 2 self assessment sections, an mcq paper of 100 questions based on the subject matter of the current issue and a data interpretation section, with self assessment questions using data to interpret and then explore your knowledge of this area. A 60-year-old woman arrives in A&E after a road traffic accident, complaining of right chest and abdominal pain. Observations and examinations She is hyperventilating, with paradoxical chest wall movement Oxygen saturation 96% with facemask 15 L Heart rate: 120/minute Blood pressure: 80/60 mmHg She is slightly obese, with a body mass index of approximately 30. She has a fractured pelvis and femur. Investigations Blood was found in the diagnostic peritoneal lavage.
