Berlin rejects claim it dropped Franco-German tank project
BERLIN, Oct 9 (Reuters) – Germany on Friday dismissed remarks by the head of the French armed forces who said Berlin had decided to quit a troubled Franco-German tank project. The dispute is the latest sign of strain in Franco-German defence cooperation after the two countries scrapped a joint next-generation fighter jet project in June. The project involves tank maker KNDS, a holding company created between France’s Nexter and Germany’s Krauss-Maffei-Wegmann (KMW).

Canada’s employment surprisingly shrinks in September, jobless rate inches up
By Promit Mukherjee OTTAWA, Oct 9 (Reuters) – Canada’s economy stunned widespread expectations to post a massive job loss in September and the unemployment rate edged up, data showed on Friday, effectively wiping off all the gains in jobs that was seen this year. The economy lost a net of 68,300 jobs in September after a loss of 41,700 positions in August, Statistics Canada said. It said the unemployment level inched up to 6.5%.
Israeli settlers flank Palestinian cafe with dozens of Israeli flags
LUBAN AL-SHARQIYA, West Bank, Oct 9 (Reuters) – Israeli settlers have planted dozens of Israeli flags at the entrance of a streetside Palestinian cafe in the occupied West Bank, obscuring it from one side in what its owner described as a blatant act of intimidation. The coffee shop in the small village of Luban al-Sharqiya sits along the West Bank’s main north-south traffic artery, used by both Palestinians and the approximately 500,000 Israeli settlers who live in the territory.
Trump’s Fed ex-nominee Shelton to advise Bessent, Treasury says
Oct 9 (Reuters) – US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has hired Judy Shelton, President Donald Trump’s former pick for the Federal Reserve Board, as an adviser with a particular focus on China, the Treasury Department said on Friday. Shelton previously led the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the National Endowment for Democracy, according to the Treasury. She has also worked as a fellow at the Independent Institute and the Hoover Institution at Stanford University.
India rejects monopoly claim after Musk accuses Ambani of blocking Starlink launch
BENGALURU, Oct 9 (Reuters) – India’s telecom minister said on Friday the country does not allow monopolies in any sector, pushing back after Elon Musk suggested billionaire Mukesh Ambani was using political influence to block Starlink’s launch in the country. “India does not allow a monopoly in any sector,” telecom minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said at a media briefing on Friday, addressing Musk’s remarks.
Lessor Avolon orders 250 Boeing, Airbus jets with option for 100 more
DUBLIN, Oct 9 (Reuters) – Global leasing giant Avolon said on Friday it had agreed to order 140 aircraft from Boeing and 110 from Airbus, with an option to buy a further 100 jets from the European planemaker. The orders were the largest Avolon, the world’s third-biggest aircraft lessor, has placed with either manufacturer and bring its total number of aircraft on order to 749, on top of the 561 it currently owns.
