A Canadian Science Policy Centre (CSPC) announcement (received via email includes notice of an upcoming virtual panel, Join us for a panel on September 28, [2026] from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. ET, exploring how dual-use technologies in AI, quantum, cybersecurity, and space can be leveraged to strengthen national defence and sovereignty.

While most of the focus these days is on AI, it’s not the only technology that represents opportunity and risk. A January 20, 2026 news item on ScienceDaily introduces the idea that quantum computers might have some security flaws. Quantum computers are expected to deliver extraordinary speed and computing power, with the potential to transform scientific research and business operations.

There are seven events taking place within a few days (more or less) of each other.

This is a Canadian effort and I gather the recent 2026 news release from Rice University (at the end of this post) is an expression of support and exuberance.

This January 15, 2026 news item on Nanowerk, offers news that is more exciting than it first appears, Note: Links have been removed, Gold nanorods are promising photocatalysts that can use light energy to drive chemical reactions—such as converting CO₂ into usable fuels or producing hydrogen from water. In this process, the nanorods act like tiny antennas that capture light and convert it into collective oscillations of their electrons.

It’s been a while since I’ve stumbled across something from the University of Eastern Finland and it’s always a treat. After a summer of wildfires and outstandingly poor air quality, it seems we in the Northern Hemisphere will be facing an even hotter year in 2027.
