July 10, 2026: The Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest is continuing to complete much needed work at and near White Rabbit trailhead, and road maintenance along Forest Road 2060. The work is being done to provide for the safety of the recreating public, and for firefighters.

(Fort Collins, CO., Jul. 02, 2026) – Due to current conditions, the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests have enacted Stage 2 fire restrictions on national forests in Boulder, Clear Creek, Gilpin, Grand, Jefferson, and Larimer counties. Stage 2 fire restrictions prohibit activities with a high potential of starting wildfires, including all campfires, smoking outdoors, and parking on grass.

Since 1905, conservation, a paradigm to sustainably use resources and care for the land has been at the agency’s heart. In 1630, forests blanketed 45%, or 1 billion acres, of what is now the United States. Today that number stands at about 39%, due in large part to conservationists and land managers across the country.

Federal wildland fire officials are releasing the identities of three firefighters who died while responding to the Knowles Fire in western Colorado on Saturday. The firefighters were assigned to the Rifle Helitack crew and were engaged in initial attack operations on the Knowles Fire when the incident occurred. The deceased firefighters have been identified as: Emily Barker, 38, of Clinton Township, Michigan, assigned to the U.S. Forest Service Rifle Helitack.

A Forest Service unmanned aircraft system flies above the Cameron Peak Fire burn area in the Roosevelt National Forest. The Cameron Peak Fire burned over 200,000 acres in northern Colorado beginning in mid-August 2020, the Forest Service is using drones to train artificial intelligence models to measure how much of that land is coming back on its own and where crews may still need to intervene for reforestation.

The U.S. Forest Service is inviting public comment on a proposed rule to modernize its directives system – the agency’s internal documentation that guides how employees carry out their work. The proposal would redefine the agency’s manual and handbooks to reduce procedural burdens, encourage innovation and return decision-making authority to employees closest to the land.

On Saturday, June 27, while working on a wildfire in western Colorado, five federal firefighters were involved in a burnover incident resulting in shelter deployment. Two firefighters are being treated for burn injuries, and three others did not survive. The identities of the U.S. Wildland Fire Service and U.S. Forest Service firefighters are being withheld pending notifications. The firefighters were assigned to the Knowles and Gore fires near the Colorado-Utah border when the incident occurred.

Not long ago, these hillsides were completely blackened. Trees stood scorched. Now early spring grasses cover the ground, bringing new growth to the charred remains of a 2024 wildfire that swept through more than 240,000 acres on the Boise National Forest in Idaho.
