Brentford have accepted a StG40 million ($A78m) offer from Al-Ahli for striker Ivan Toney, with the deal on course for completion in the final hours of the summer transfer window. The England forward had also attracted interest from Premier League clubs, including Chelsea, but is now set for a medical ahead of completing a move to the Saudi Pro League outfit.

Uruguay striker Luis Suarez has announced his international retirement, ending a 17-year career with his national team as their top-scorer with 69 goals. The 37-year-old, who has 142 caps for his country, made his international debut in 2007 and was key in the squad that reached the semi-finals of the 2010 World Cup and won the Copa America a year later. "Friday will be my last match with my country's national team," an emotional Suarez told a press conference on Monday.

Dressed in sky blue with the Sydney Opera House as his backdrop, Costa echoed the same sentiments that now-Sydney FC legend Del Piero spoke of 12 years ago when he proclaimed the start of his new career on arrival. Whiz kid Nestory Irankunda is being tipped to star in the Bundesliga this season, but first the Socceroos want him to work his magic in their upcoming World Cup qualifiers. The Socceroos have assembled on the Gold Coast ahead of Thursday night's clash with Bahrain at Robina Stadium. The match marks the start of what is the third - and possibly final - round of World Cup qualification for the Socceroos.

Wellington Phoenix have bolstered their push for A-League Men silverware with the signing of versatile Japanese forward Hideki Ishige. Ishige joins the New Zealand-based club on a two-year deal after three seasons with top-flight Japanese club Gamba Osaka. He has played almost 300 matches in the J1 League for Gamba and Shimizu S-Pulse, and was crowned the AFC men's youth player of the year in 2011.

German great Thomas Müller has scored in his club-record 710th game as Bayern Munich beat Freiburg 2-0 in the Bundesliga. Müller replaced new signing Michael Olise in the 59th minute of Sunday's match to break a tie with goalkeeping great Sepp Maier on 709 career games in all competitions for Bayern.

Paris Saint-Germain are enjoying a perfect start to the season despite the summer departure of star striker Kylian Mbappe for Real Madrid, after securing another victory - 3-1 at Lille - in the French league. PSG lead the standings with nine points from three games, having now scored 13 goals. They opened their campaign with a 4-1 away win at Le Havre, followed by a 6-0 demolition of Montpellier.

With two goals in less than 10 minutes, Kylian Mbappe has ended his scoring drought in the Spanish league, leading Real Madrid to a 2-0 win over Real Betis. Madrid's biggest signing in years, Mbappé had scored once in the team's win over Atalanta in the UEFA Super Cup final last month, but he had yet to find the net in his previous three Spanish league matches.

For Thiago Motta's Juventus, it was a well-earned point that kept the Bianconeri unbeaten. For Daniele De Rossi's Roma, it was a step in the right direction after a difficult start to the season. Juventus were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Roma in Serie A on Sunday with each side producing only one shot on goal. Celtic claimed Old Firm bragging rights with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Rangers at Parkhead. Rangers were already two points behind their rivals in the  Premiership ahead of kick-off on Sunday and it took Celtic only 17 minutes to take the lead. Daizen Maeda made the breakthrough when he fired the ball home after fine play by Alistair Johnston.
