Reading Time: 10 minutes There’s been a whole lot of change in my life personally in recent times. A needlessly ugly divorce, kids living far away, injuries post-Palisades Fires that are thankfully and finally healing up only start the conversation. One of my big hippie-ass goals is to be “more present” in life. My friend and executive coach Suzanne Bryant helps a lot of enlightened tech execs in Los Angeles find these goals.
ATC SCM20ASL Active Loudspeakers Reviewed
Reading Time: 10 minutes Thankfully, there has been an increase in the amount of active speakers entering the audiophile market over the past few years. I figured it was about time that I reviewed an active speaker from ATC, one of the companies that has been doing this longer than most. I had a passing familiarity with ATC from seeing them at audiophile shows and better stereo stores for decades, but only recently did they really catch my attention.
Onkyo ICON C-30 CD Player Reviewed
Reading Time: 7 minutes Onkyo as a brand is in a time of resurgence. After being somewhat dormant for a few years while the company was for sale, Onkyo has re-remerged with the ICON product line in 2025 with the M-80 amplifier, the P-80 network preamplifier, and the A-50 integrated amplifier, before releasing the C-30 CD player in early 2026.
Software and Firmware Have Changed the Modern Audiophile User Experience
Reading Time: 10 minutes In my many years as an audiophile, there’s been a revolution in the audiophile world. Music lovers no longer need to rely on shelves of LPs, CDs, or tapes – we can access huge streaming libraries, and at a monthly price of about the cost of a silver disc or two. The idea of needing to march out to the record store to get that new album is a fading memory. Streaming is easier on the wallet and just easier in general. Because of it, the audiophile world is a better place.
Chesky Audio LC2 Reference Monitor Reviewed
Reading Time: 9 minutes I had the opportunity to review the sub-$1,000 per pair Chesky Audio LC1 bookshelf monitors (read the review) in 2025 and came away impressed by what was likely the first of many loudspeaker designs by college student and audio prodigy Lucca Chesky. The unique 3D-printed cabinet and quality components Chesky employed in the LC1s have made their way into the second-generation LC2s but are now refined with a series of meaningful upgrades.
Dynaudio To Pull Out of U.S. Market
Reading Time: 2 minutes Famed audiophile loudspeaker manufacturer, Dynaudio, will announce tomorrow that they are pulling out of the United States market. This news has been confirmed, first hand, by an executive with direct knowledge of the situation at Dynaudio North America. Factors such as import tariffs and inflation are main drivers of the decision. Poor marketing, focused on older buyers, didn’t help but the powers that be in Denmark were fossed on the ways of the past.
ArgentPur IBIS Class D Gallium Nitride (GaN) Amplifier Reviewed
Reading Time: 10 minutes It may not be widely known, but Class-D amplification has been around in one form or another since the 1950s. Credit is generally given to British engineer Alex Reeves, who invented pulse code modulation, which today is known as PCM. Towards the end of the 1950s, Reeves developed the concept of having a PCM amplifier convert an analog signal into a switching signal, thus essentially creating the amplifier classification we know as Class-D.
PS Audio PMG Signature 512 DAC Reviewed
Reading Time: 9 minutes I recently reviewed the PS Audio PMG Signature preamp (read my review) and was highly impressed. I remember it sounding extremely open, highly detailed and blazingly fast, but never edgy or harsh. When I had the opportunity to review another PS Audio Signature product, I was eager to get my hands on it. Enter the PMG Signature 512 DAC.
Is High Performance Audio Moving Towards a Lifestyle Product?
Reading Time: 7 minutes The 2026 Axpona Audio Show (read our coverage) was the largest in their history. Over 12,000 visitors, audiophiles, press and industry personnel spent three days at the Renaissance Schaumburg, the large convention center/hotel about 30 minutes from the Chicago O’Hare airport. Some 200 or more rooms were devoted to all things audio. This is a significant increase over the allotment of rooms and attendees from last year.
Sonitus Wave X and Canvas Acoustical Absorption Device Reviewed
Reading Time: 8 minutes With all due respect, the establishment audiophile publications don’t spend enough time talking about the importance of room treatments, in even the most modest of stereo systems. Let me make this as clear as I possibly can: there is nothing that you can do to make your sound better (for less money) than to physically treat the basic elements of your listening room. Exactly how to treat your room is a matter for true experts.
