Surface designer Jorge Ania, Studio DC, has spent his career teaching industrial printers to imitate stone, marble and wood. He spoke to FuturePrint about the move to digital that remade the ceramic tile industry, why wood décor has been so much slower to follow, and the half of the story that no machine can tell on its own. The first time Jorge Ania saw a digitally printed ceramic tile, he wanted nothing to do with it. ‘Honestly, my first reaction was negative. I didn't like it at all,’ he admits.

One of the most important advances has been the industry's ability to print reliably onto increasingly complex three-dimensional objects. Greater throw distances between printheads and substrates, combined with advances in waveform optimisation and a much deeper understanding of airflow dynamics within high-speed production systems, have significantly improved industrial robustness. Printing onto curved containers is fundamentally different from printing onto flat materials.

Hot air drying has powered print and coating lines for decades, but it comes with a familiar trade-off: you heat the whole substrate, spend energy you do not really need to spend, and still fight limitations on speed and material choice.
