⛅️ High 20C Good morning, Canada Day is Wednesday, and there's plenty happening across the Fraser Valley — from Abbotsford's parade and fireworks to Chilliwack's drone show and Hope's car show and evening celebration. We've put together a guide to what's on in your community. And speaking of community celebrations, Abbotsford's new West Railway Plaza is open and will soon come alive with local artists and vendors — a good sign for Historic Downtown.
🌧️ High 17C Good morning, Chilliwack's 2025 Annual Report is now available, and it's worth a browse — the city paved over eight kilometres of roads, planted 5,400 trees, and the fire department responded to nearly 5,000 calls for service last year, among many other highlights. Langley City also has some news on the accessibility front, having adopted a new plan to make the city more inclusive over the next decade. – Emily Keep local journalism alive by supporting The Current.
Every year, the City of Chilliwack publishes an annual report covering everything from major infrastructure projects to departmental finances. The 2025 edition is now available online, and it offers a useful snapshot of a city that had a busy year. Some of the highlights are well-known — the 2050 Official Community Plan and the Tyson-Keith Wilson upgrades were widely covered. But the report also captures the quieter work that doesn't always make headlines.
⛅️ High 27C Good morning, For many parents, getting rid of an old car seat usually means sending it to the landfill. But a Fraser Valley pilot program is changing that, helping families recycle expired seats and giving nearly every component a chance to be reused. And in upcoming events: A 40th anniversary celebration in Hope, a self-guided garden tour in Chilliwack, and another busy weekend at Abbotsford's farmers' market. – Emily Keep local journalism alive by supporting The Current.
Car seats are notoriously difficult to recycle — they're made of mixed materials, labour-intensive to disassemble, and not covered by any provincial recycling program in B.C. Left in a landfill, they can take up to 1,000 years to decompose. For most families, dropping off an old seat means it ends up in the trash.
☀️ High 32C Good morning, HUBCo Brewing in Mission is closing its doors on July 4 after four years in business. There are only two weeks left to enjoy one of Mission’s own homegrown breweries—HUBCo Brewing announced last week that it will be closing for good next month. The brewery, which opened four years ago, is set to shutter on July 4. “After four wild years of building, dreaming, hustling, adapting, and giving this everything we had, we’ve come to the heartbreaking realization that we can no longer sustain operations,” HUBCo’s operators shared in a social media post.
☀️ High 25C Good morning, Our own William Johnson has weighed in on Sunday’s Highway 1 closure after getting stuck in traffic for three and a half hours. He and his family were headed home from North Vancouver to Chilliwack—the trip usually takes them 80 minutes. Check out William’s thoughts below on how thousands of drivers trapped in gridlock, running low on gas, managing tired kids, just trying to get home from work or weekend fun was entirely avoidable and a complete communications failure.
🌤️ High 29C Good morning, This Sunday marks the 30th anniversary of National Indigenous Peoples Day — a day to recognize and celebrate the traditions, cultures, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. The date falls on the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, which has held deep cultural and spiritual significance for many Indigenous communities for generations.

Roads need maintenance. Infrastructure projects require lane closures, detours, and occasional disruption. Most drivers understand that. It's part of living in a growing region. My family was driving home from North Vancouver to Chilliwack. Under normal conditions, it's a trip of roughly 80 minutes.
