The Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE) is a non-profit umbrella organisation of veterinary organisations from 38 European countries. It was founded in 1975 and nowadays represents around 200,000 European veterinarians. The FVE strives to support veterinarians in delivering their professional responsibilities and representing the veterinary profession to the outside world. The FVE provides a platform for veterinarians across Europe to interact, to discuss and to develop position papers and professional guidelines. The current FVE motto is: "Veterinarians care for animals and people!" FVE publishes 4 times a year a newsletter which can be found on the FVE website. Source

From emerging science to sampling strategies and herd-level decision-making, what does the emergence of a Shamonda-like virus mean for practising veterinarians? The Shamonda-like virus, an infection spread by biting midges, primarily impacts pregnant cattle by triggering abortions, stillbirths, and severe joint or brain deformities in calves. Because adult infections present mild, easily overlooked symptoms like slight fevers or minor milk losses, early detection relies heavily on surveillance.

A recent press release confirmed that the vaccine stickers in the vaccination certificate of a dog that died of rabies in Germany in January 2026 were counterfeit. This is the conclusion reached by MSD’s forensic laboratory in Schachen, Switzerland. The investigation was commissioned by the authorities in connection with a recent rabies case in Rhineland-Palatinate.

On 10 August 2026, Regulation (EU) 2026/1818 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 17 June 2026 on the welfare of dogs and cats and their traceability was published in the Official Journal of the European Union, marking the completion of the EU legislative process. The Regulation will come into force in 2 years.

Final-year veterinary students will have the opportunity to explore this question during the CEVA–EVERI Internship 2026, taking place 7–11 December 2026 at CEVA Santé Animale Headquarters in Libourne, France. The latest ADIS weekly notification highlights continued circulation of several important transboundary and emerging animal diseases across Europe and neighbouring countries, with African swine fever (ASF) remaining the most widely reported disease event during the reporting period, dominated by cases in wild boar populations, with new outbreaks reported in Bulgaria, Germany, Estonia, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Spain.
