The Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE) is a non-profit umbrella organisation of veterinary organisations from 38 European countries. It was founded in 1975 and nowadays represents around 200,000 European veterinarians. The FVE strives to support veterinarians in delivering their professional responsibilities and representing the veterinary profession to the outside world. The FVE provides a platform for veterinarians across Europe to interact, to discuss and to develop position papers and professional guidelines. The current FVE motto is: "Veterinarians care for animals and people!" FVE publishes 4 times a year a newsletter which can be found on the FVE website. Source

The latest ADIS weekly notification highlights continued circulation of several important transboundary and emerging animal diseases across Europe and neighbouring countries, with African swine fever (ASF) remaining the most widely reported disease event during the reporting period, dominated by cases in wild boar populations, with new outbreaks reported in Bulgaria, Germany, Estonia, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Spain.

On 8 July, the Commission will host a high level conference to mark 10 years since the Animal Health Law entered into force across the EU. The event will be opened with a keynote speech by Olivér Várhelyi, EU Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare, and speakers will include policymakers, FVE, veterinary authorities, scientists, experts from international organisations, EU institutions, and other stakeholders.

On 18th June 2026, FVE and EU Health Policy Platform (EUHPP) convened a joint webinar: Animals in Disasters, the Cost of Being Unprepared and the Essential Role of Veterinarians. The event attracted almost 200 interested colleagues from across the world to explore the multi-faceted value of veterinary expertise in times of crisis, as well as the benefits of incorporating animals and veterinarians into preparedness planning.

On 22 May, the Council adopted new legislation establishing, for the first time, harmonised EU-wide standards for the welfare, breeding, identification, and traceability of cats and dogs. The new rules introduce common requirements for breeders, sellers, shelters, and online platforms involved in placing cats and dogs on the EU market. They also establish mandatory identification and registration systems to ensure full traceability across the European Union.
