With permission from Vanguard, we have reproduced their analysis and recommendations: US Naval Forces Central Command has issued a notice advising that military operations are ongoing across the Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, North Arabian Sea and the Strait of Hormuz amid the current conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran. A maritime warning zone has been established to reduce the risk of inadvertent targeting and misidentification during military operations.

Gard launches war risk service with a mutual spirit
Gard offers the new service through an agreement with the Norwegian Shipowners' Mutual War Risks Insurance Association (DNK), a market-leading provider of intelligence, active loss prevention services and war risk covers. Bjørnar Andresen, Gard’s Chief Underwriting Officer, said: “We live in uncertain times, and our clients rely on good intelligence and unfiltered threat assessments to make the very best decisions they can.
The UK Electronic Trade Documents Act 2023 enters into force
The Electronic Trade Documents Act was preceded, in 2022, by the UK Law Commission’s Report on Electronic trade documents, which was the culmination of an extensive consultation process with stakeholders, including the International Group of P&I Clubs.
A more ambitious decarbonisation strategy for international shipping
The previous strategy aimed for a 50% reduction in emissions by 2050, however the new one is far more ambitious. The IMO is now targeting at least a 20% reduction by 2030 and 70% by 2040, compared to 2008 emission levels. The new strategy also includes striving for even higher reductions than this by 2030 and 2040. Carbon pricing Shipping of cargo and passengers within, into and from the EU/EEA will be subject to carbon pricing through the EU emission trading system (ETS) from 1 January 2024.

Update from the CEO: steady course ahead
Almost halfway into the year, I am happy to share that despite the continued geopolitical tensions and a challenging economic climate, Gard keeps a steady course ahead. Gard offers higher discount to Members renewing mutual P&I
The OGD – up from 5 per cent last year – reflects Gard’s strong and stable capital situation. It is based on the Gard group capital situation at the time of the decision and given as a percentage on the agreed Estimated Total Call (ETC) for vessels on risk for the 2024 policy year. Within P&I insurance, the total premium required for the policy year is estimated and referred to as the ‘Estimated Total Call’ (ETC).
Heroic Idun: Crew and vessel released
Gard is pleased that the HEROIC IDUN and its 26 crew members have finally been released. The vessel has departed Bonny, Nigeria and has now left Nigerian waters. «Gard is relieved and delighted to see that the 26 crew members of HEROIC IDUN are now finally free to go home and to be reunited with their loved ones.
