At this year's Kuala Lumpur Men's Fashion Week (TKLMFW), Menteri Besar Incorporated (Perak) returned for a second consecutive year, this time as a quiet architect behind one of the region's most compelling fashion statements: the reassertion of Perak's batik heritage on a stage built for the modern gentleman.

What ties these men together is a shared fluency rather than a shared uniform. Each understood the particular dialect spoken at a Malaysian gala evening: black tie as the foundation, and then one deliberate departure, whether through a timepiece, a colour, a pattern, or a silhouette borrowed from somewhere entirely different.

There comes a point past forty when a man starts reading his own face like a report card. The fine lines at the corners of the eyes are no longer "character." The oiliness that once felt like a teenage inconvenience returns, except now it sits on skin that has also started to lose its bounce, so the shine no longer reads as youthful, it reads as tired.
