For fifteen years, New York City locals, music lovers flying in from afar, and tri-state area tweens venturing on their first trip into the city without their parents have flocked to the Governors Ball for “New York’s biggest party with 60+ of the world’s best artists.” Back in 2022, I – a tri-state Suburban teenager with a newfound sense of independence gained by taking the train – attended the festival for the first time as.

It’s Memorial Day weekend and there’s a nor’easter in Massachusetts. It’s been raining for so long I forgot it was, by some accounts, supposed to be summer. I forgot a lot of things, apparently, like what life is like upon returning home from college. The sun refuses to shine. The dog wears an American flag collar. The world goes quiet at 9 o’clock. But Memorial Day weekend is a harbinger of change. Scratch that, of possibility, maybe even of rebirth.

It’s not often you get a second chance at rock fame. bôa, who found themselves a deluge of new fans after 19 years of inactivity, understood this gospel. Their show at DC’s 9:30 Club on 5/6 showed that true musical camaraderie is inseparable by time or distance. The London alt-rock band began with “Deeply,” a song from their 2010 album Twilight that possessed a crunchy ass guitar riff.

On April 11th, Snow Patrol made their return to the Anthem for their newest album, The Forest Is the Path (2024), a couple band members fewer but hardly worse for wear. At nine o’clock almost on the dot, the lights dimmed and the band members walked casually onto the stage, as the crowd–young and old–screamed and clapped their name.

With its imposing black walls and 6,000-person capacity, The Anthem can be an intimidating venue, often swallowing up less seasoned acts.

Father John Misty once again graced the stage at the Anthem on Saturday, March 1st, touring his most recent and most unconventional album to date, Mahashmashana (2024). An expansive, undulating record, Mahashmashana marks a tonal departure from his last stint at the Anthem, touring Chloe and the Next 20th Century (2022). Nevertheless, his lyricism and wit were on full display, commanding the audience with each utterance.

Irish singer-songwriter Orla Gartland is set to perform at the 9:30 Club on Saturday, April 26th. This tour comes after the release of her sophomore album Everybody Needs a Hero (2024). In Everybody Needs a Hero, Gartland experimented with thematic storytelling, as every song on the album details a scene from one of her former long-term romantic relationships. The album dives deep into the complexity of love and relationships, as Gartland explores the good, the bad, and the ugly.

By Katie Snyder On April 28th, Myles Smith will headline The Anthem, a popular music venue on The Wharf in D.C., supported by British indie band TORS. Hailing from Luton, England, Smith is a 28-year-old singer and songwriter who first gained popularity on the media-sharing app TikTok by posting song covers. When his rendition of The Neighborhood’s “Sweater Weather” went viral in 2022, Smith joined Extended Play Music Group, while continuing a presence on social media.

By William “Brady” Stoffregen I’m wide awake, it’s morning, and Bright Eyes is playing at The Anthem in DC on April 20th. Fans of emotional crescendos and indie folk rejoice. Not only will this mark the 20th anniversary of their most celebrated album, I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning (2005), but also their second release since the band got back together in 2020: Five Dice, All Threes. For many students at Georgetown, this band’s popularity predates their birth.
