THE NUMBER: 3.1. That’s how many agent-workdays OpenAI now runs for every one a human does, inside its own walls, by its own published count. The agents passed human labor there back in June. Sit with that on Labor Day, the one holiday we set aside for the worker: the company standing closest to the frontier already staffs itself better than three-to-one with machines.
The Talented Mr. Ripley
THE NUMBER: 95%. That’s the discount Meta (NASDAQ: META) will give you on its new model if you let it train on what you type into it. Read it the other way and it’s a price tag. The gap between the private tier and the data tier works out, by Tomasz Tunguz’s math, to $1.24 per million tokens, roughly $454,000 a year for a business running a billion tokens a day. That’s not a discount. That’s Meta telling you, to the penny, what your data is worth to it.
Jiro Dreams of Sushi
THE NUMBER: 84%. That’s the share of federal revenue that starts life as somebody’s paycheck. Individual income tax, $2.66 trillion. Payroll tax, $1.75 trillion. Together, $4.4 trillion of the $5.2 trillion the Treasury took in last fiscal year, and every dollar of it originates as a W-2. Corporate income tax is 8.6 percent. Hold that next to Monday’s number, the $40 trillion of debt, and next to the one Bessent keeps saying: we’ll grow our way out. Grow what, exactly? The 84 percent is the wage base.
Ed Zitron is the Mainstream Media’s Perfect Skeptic
April 2025. On Hacker News, a developer shared a simple observation: 75% of engineers in his survey said they actively use AI coding tools. Cursor. GitHub Copilot. Claude. Something. He had receipts. 216 developers, self-selected but honest, mostly shipping code for a living. This wasn’t a think tank survey or a VC-funded report. It was engineers talking about their actual day.
Field of Dreams - CO/AI
THE NUMBER: $1.1 trillion. That’s the US data-center build already in the pipeline — roughly 604 projects, about half the planet’s facilities sitting on American soil. Hold it next to the number we opened on Monday: $40 trillion of federal debt. Everyone is arguing about the debt. Almost nobody has noticed that the thing that pays it down and the thing everybody’s protesting are the same thing. The $1.1 trillion isn’t a tech budget. It’s what “grow our way out” actually costs to pour into the ground.
Two Things That Can’t Be True At The Same Time
Daily Briefing The US just crossed $40 trillion in debt, paid for by withholding taxes on wages. AI's whole job is to delete the wages. You can be long the machines or long the American balance sheet — not both. Harry DeMott · Aug 31, 2026 · 21 min read THE NUMBER: $40 trillion. That’s the US federal debt, which crossed the mark this month, months earlier than the forecasters penciled in.
Anthropic Called It a 25% Raise. Claude Code Users Get 17% Less.
Saturday afternoon, @ClaudeDevs posted the good news or a fast one? Starting September 14, Anthropic is permanently raising standard weekly limits in Claude Code by 25% for Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise. Until then, the current 50% increase stays. Then the second tweet, the one they had to write because the first one was a trick. “Compared to today, this works out to a 17% reduction in weekly limits on Claude Code.” They said it. Out loud. On the same thread as the raise.
All Roads Lead to Hugging Face
THE NUMBER: $12.9 billion. That’s the price Nvidia has reportedly agreed to pay for Hugging Face, the neutral repository where the entire AI industry keeps its open models — roughly 86 times the company’s revenue, and for a business that turned down Nvidia’s $500 million last year because it didn’t want an investor big enough to push it around. Neither company has confirmed the deal, so hold the number loosely.
Anthropic Says $30 Trillion. Only Nvidia Showed the Money.
THE NUMBER: $30 trillion. That’s the total addressable market Anthropic is preparing to put in front of IPO investors, according to the Wall Street Journal — bigger than the entire economy of China, roughly the whole annual output of the United States, about a quarter of the planet. It edges out the $28.5 trillion SpaceX floated in its own filing in May and takes the record for the largest number anyone has ever printed on a pitch deck.
The Calculator Defence
THE NUMBER: $899. That’s the starting price of the new Mac mini Apple unveiled Tuesday — a box that now runs real open-weight AI models on your desk, in the company’s own words “without counting tokens or worrying about rising cloud costs.” Two years ago that capability lived only behind a frontier lab’s meter, billed by the million tokens. Now it sits next to your router for less than a decent laptop.
