The annual Fireman’s Fete returned to Grimsby today, Saturday 11 July, raising money for local charities. Last year’s event raised more than £26,000 for St Andrew’s Hospice and The Fire Fighters Charity after attracting more than 5,000 visitors. Crowds once again gathered on Peaks Lane to enjoy family-friendly entertainment, live demonstrations and plenty of fundraising activities. Take a look through our gallery from the day’s festivities.

A man has been taken to hospital with serious injuries following reports of a stabbing in Grimsby. Emergency services were called to a property on Weelsby Street at around 1.35PM today, Friday 10 July, where a man was found to have suffered serious stab wounds. He was taken to hospital for treatment to serious injuries that are not considered to be life changing at this time. Police are now appealing for information.

A team of open water swimmers from Grimsby and Cleethorpes have successfully crossed the English Channel after almost two years of preparation, completing one of the world’s most demanding endurance challenges. The five-person team, Channel Rats 26, finished the relay crossing in 16 hours and 33 minutes on Saturday 21 June, swimming from Samphire Hoe near Dover to Cap Gris Nez in France.

Internet sensation Spud Man has arrived in Cleethorpes for a three-day visit, attracting huge crowds from the early hours. The social media star, whose real name is Ben Newman, is renowned for drawing long queues with his loaded jacket potatoes. Fans were delighted when he announced a stop on Cleethorpes seafront from 10 to 12 July as part of his latest UK tour.

Grimsby has taken a major step towards becoming the UK’s first Town of Culture after being officially shortlisted for the prestigious title. The town is one of just 15 places to make the shortlist from 398 applications nationwide. The milestone celebrates the passion, creativity and pride of Grimsby’s residents, community groups, artists, businesses and organisations, who helped shape the bid through months of collaboration.

Part of the former Matthew Humberstone Lower School playing field in Cleethorpes could soon become a new housing development. The 6.85-acre brownfield site, off Davenport Drive, has been put up for sale and earmarked for residential development. North East Lincolnshire Council said the land is being marketed to developers as an opportunity to deliver “much-needed housing” in an established residential area. The site previously had planning permission for 58 homes, but that consent has now expired.

An update has been issued after a major emergency response was launched at Humberston Fitties this morning. Multiple crews from Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, Humberside Police, HM Coastguard, the RNLI and East Midlands Ambulance Service were called to the scene after an incident was reported at around 7.25am. Emergency service vehicles gathered near the beachfront while a search operation was seen taking place.

A 35-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of drink and drug driving after his car broke down. Police were called to Waithe Lane in Brigsley during the early hours of Tuesday 7 July, following reports of a broken-down vehicle. When officers arrived, the driver allegedly told them he had consumed alcohol and drugs. A search of the man was carried out, during which officers reportedly discovered suspected Class A drugs.

Fresh images have revealed how Immingham’s new 24-hour gym will look when it opens next month. Snap Fitness has officially moved into the former B&M unit on Kennedy Way, with work to transform the vacant store into a modern fitness facility now nearing completion ahead of its planned August opening. New computer-generated images offer the first glimpse inside the gym, showcasing a contemporary space complete with a dedicated Reformer Pilates studio.

Plans to transform the former Pleasure Island site into a £70 million development have been delayed after a last-minute legal challenge. North East Lincolnshire Council’s Planning Committee had been expected to approve proposals for a new Lidl superstore, hotels and holiday lodges on Wednesday 8 July, after officers recommended the scheme for approval.
