After the environment secretary, Angela Eagle, claimed that Thames Water isn’t “technically insolvent”, Good Law Project have called on Ofwat to make sure ministers stop misleading the public. Eagle’s claims are just the latest in a barrage of excuses from a government that refuses to put the failing water company into special administration.

An exclusive poll carried out for Good Law Project following Professor Jason Arday’s death shows that more than half of British people back “much tougher” regulation of the press. Jason died by suicide last month, after a racist campaign led by the Times and the Telegraph which saw 249 articles published by 15 national outlets over 22 days. Newspapers attacked his work and his integrity, even though universities and journals had found there was no evidence he had done anything wrong.

When the Tories were in power Kemi Badenoch boasted of stuffing key posts in the NHS with transphobes; any principles Wes Streeting had when health secretary he cheerfully abandoned to try and please the same bigots who he now complains are hounding him for his sexuality and the new health secretary, Yvette Cooper, is distinctly MIA.

In August last year, we complained to the Bar Standards Board (BSB) after Sarah Phillimore misgendered, deadnamed and shared photos of Kate* in more than 50 posts on social media. Those posts led to dozens of others hurling abuse at Kate online, which ultimately led her to try to end her own life. As a barrister, Phillimore is meant to be held to high standards by the Bar Standards Board.

Good Law Project are defending the Green Party of England and Wales, after “gender critical” activists threatened them with legal action. When the party rejected an application from Green Women’s Declaration to hold a stall at the Green conference in October 2025, the group launched a legal challenge claiming discrimination because of their views on gender and “sex-based rights”. The reason the application was refused, the Greens say, was to protect their trans members.

In October 2025, the Green Party rejected an application for a stall at their annual conference from the “gender critical” group Green Women’s Declaration. The group launched a legal challenge, claiming the party was discriminating against them because of their beliefs about gender. The Greens recognise the rights enshrined in the Equality Act 2010 for people to hold gender critical views.

Although we got the important things right, we also got some things wrong. But I am accountable to our supporters, and I will always tell them when meaningful criticisms of us are well founded.

This is what The Times published on Sunday 16 August – two days after the death of our friend Professor Jason Arday. This is astonishing stuff. That their enslavement taught Black people to be liars – and that Jason Arday may well have been a specialist in “black grifter chic.”  This is arguably the most revolting thing The Times – which has a long and inglorious history of racism, misogyny, ableism and transphobia – has ever published.

I’ve been publicly critical of the Guardian’s conduct on this story and so, as neutrally as I can, I want to set out the facts as I know them before making some general points. I was approached by a Black member of the academic community on 25 July who wanted Good Law Project to host an open letter in support of Professor Arday. Prior to the approach I had not heard of Professor Arday.

Before his death on Friday, Dr Jason Arday was subject to a barrage of racist, ableist and cruel media attention, which continued to escalate even after his resignation on August 5th. The press attention was unrelenting. 249 articles were published in 22 days, mostly led by the broadsheets. This wasn’t a tabloid scandal – the journalists involved were often public figures in their own right.
