Three returning pitchers are posting solid numbers this summer. Sean McGrath is 1-0 with a 1.47 ERA for the Wenatchee AppleSox, striking out 18 batters over 18 1/3 innings. He earned his victory August 1 against the Kamloops NorthPaws, allowing one run and two hits in 6 1/3 innings with five strikeouts.

Juniors Colin Pearce and Roman Anast co-led Cal Poly with three attempts apiece as the Mustangs outshot San Francisco, 13-8.

This spring, Cal Poly sophomore Hamad Mousa, the Big West’s leading men’s basketball scorer, hit the transfer portal. The market, not surprisingly, was strong for a 6-foot-8 wing player who can dribble, pass and shoot. The bidding started around $1.5 million for one year. As spring wore on, and Mousa remained one of the final stars in the portal left unsigned, his value increased.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Mike Krukow, a pitcher at Cal Poly from 1971-73 before embarking on a 14-year Major League career on the mound and 36 seasons in the San Francisco Giants press box alongside his best friend and broadcasting partner Duane Kuiper, announced his retirement Thursday, effective at the end of the 2026 season. “I just want to let everyone know that I will be retiring at the end of the season,” Krukow, 74, said in a statement that was released by the team.

It was the final action of the preseason for the defending Big West champions, who open their 2026 season this coming Wednesday at home against UNLV.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Reigning Big West champion Cal Poly women’s soccer was selected as one of the preseason favorites in the Big West Preseason Coaches’ Poll released Wednesday, while Annika Smith was named to the 11-player Preseason All-Conference Team. The Mustangs were picked to finish first in the 12-team preseason poll alongside Blue-Green rival UC Santa Barbara.

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Seventh-year Cal Poly head coach Phil Rowe finalized the Cal Poly men’s golf roster for the 2026-27 season (Friday) with the announcement that Vidur Subramaniam (Sydney, Australia) has joined the program as a transfer following one season at Washington. “Vid is a fantastic fit for our program. He excels in the classroom, has tremendous character and is a great teammate,” Rowe said.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly women's basketball head coach Shanele Stires has announced the addition of proven winner, developer and leader Ed Daniels as the program's newest assistant coach. A native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Daniels played guard at Bakersfield College from 2013-15 before beginning a professional playing career in Ireland, Spain and Canada.
