Samtidig som tapet av naturmangfold akselererer, støtter både offentlig og privat finans fortsatt aktiviteter som forringer og skader økosystemer.

One of the strongest messages emerging from the Assembly was the growing recognition that communication is no longer viewed as an optional project component, but as an essential part of achieving environmental outcomes. GRID-Arendal’s strategical communication lead, Maria Dalby, participated in the GEF learning session Strategic Outreach: Engaging Donors, the Private Sector, and the Media in GEF-9, alongside leading international journalists and media professionals.

More than 80 percent of Malawi’s land is degraded. About 33,000 hectares of forest is lost every year. Soil erosion is affecting around 85 percent of agricultural land, while maize yields remain far below their potential because of poor soil fertility and climate pressures. According to the State of the Environment report, land degradation alone is costing Malawi an estimated 7 percent of its GDP each year.

We started off the week with an “Early Career Researcher Day” – where 12 SEA-Quester PhD students and Post-Docs joined GRID-Arendal's videographer Olivia Rempel for a media training workshop and a quick crash course in making Instagram reels.

In April 2026, as global experts gathered in Nairobi for the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Integrated Program Forum, one message stood out: environmental challenges can no longer be tackled in isolation. Climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution are deeply interconnected, and so must be the solutions. For GRID-Arendal, this is not a new realization. It is the foundation of how the organization works.

Global Priorities: Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS; also referred to as the Bonn Convention) is the only global convention established exclusively for the conservation of migratory species, their habitats, and migration routes. It is also one of the oldest Multilateral Environmental Agreements under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Programme, adopted on 23 June 1979.

Despite differences between the islands, a clear common vision emerged. Across the Comoros, stakeholders highlighted three pillars for the future blue economy: Fisheries remain central to livelihoods and food security. Participants stressed the importance of sustainable management, improved monitoring, and greater value addition through processing and aquaculture.

Three GRID-Arendal colleagues (Remco Lameijer, Olivia Rempel, Edward Hinkle) had the opportunity to join different legs of the sail, bringing both communication expertise and deep environmental knowledge to the voyage. On board, they played an active role in documenting and communicating the voyage as it unfolded.
