When I first reported on wine sustainability for GuildSomm in 2019, one of the greatest challenges was defining the practice in a cohesive, international way. Organic and biodynamic farming were relatively easy to describe, while sustainable encompassed a much wider, less standardized set of ideas.

In this episode of GuildSomm: Into the Glass, host and Master Sommelier Chris Tanghe speaks with two artisans of alternative aging vessels to explore what makes their preferred vessels special and how the resulting wines differ from those made with wood treatment. Sebastián Zuccardi makes wines in the Uco Valley of Mendoza, Argentina, and has devoted his entire production to concrete.

This edited excerpt, from the new, second edition of Richard Mayson’s book The Wines of Portugal, published by Académie du Vin Library, delves into Portuguese vineyards and some of the distinctive grapes found in them. It was the wine writer Hugh Johnson who described Portugal’s vineyards as “a site of special scientific and sensuous interest.” This was back in the mid-1990s, when Portugal was still something of a terra incognita after decades of insularity.

In this episode of GuildSomm: Into the Glass, Master Sommelier Jackson Rohrbaugh joins GuildSomm's director of education, Chris Tanghe, to blind taste three neutral white wines. They discuss the evolution of typicity and the regions they are currently excited about and drinking themselves. Jackson passed the Master Sommelier exam in 2017 while working at the iconic Seattle restaurant Canlis.

Brachetto is required at a minimum 10%, with Moscato Bianco at a minimum 70%. Washington State has a new AVA, the 280th in the US. The new Columbia Hills AVA is nested in the Columbia Valley AVA, with primarily Cabernet Sauvignon vines planted near the Columbia River.

My first job in the wine industry was at a tiny shop and bar that sold exclusively English (and one Welsh) wine. It was 2012, and the concept was, to put it politely, pioneering. But it takes a hint of madness to build something new—as, I imagine, most British wine producers would agree. In the past 15 years, English wine has gone from a novelty to an established category, from a rich person’s folly to a serious industry.
