Photo: Jessica Dozois. “Fuck it, I’m doing it — better late than never.” Vancouver/Toronto quintet Kill Chain just came out swingin’ with a fierce, grievous beatdown of a debut three-song demo. It’s tough-to-the-core, the collection marauding the speakers with grotesque dives and defiantly mean-mugged metallic riffage (“Never Been Yours”), sometimes blasting through an incensed, speed-forward death-thrash (“Dead Wrong”).

Photo: Paul Drake Up until a few months ago, Jejune bassist-vocalist Arabella Harrison hadn’t performed any of her cult emo outfit’s songs since the turn of the century, right about the time she left the band to forge a new creative path. Formed in Boston before settling in San Diego, they’d spent the late ‘90s building their rep on the indie circuit while sharing stages with acts like Jimmy Eat World, Mineral, the Get Up Kids, the Promise Ring, Piebald and more.

Hello, folks! No fresh Halloween interview this year, but it feels like a ripe time to revisit the first-ever Gut Feeling Podcast, which is an interview with Ink & Dagger bassist Joshua Brown. Amazingly, Ink & Dagger are playing a series of four shows around Philadelphia this Halloween season (starting tonight), marking the horror-locked, psychedelic-hardcore band’s first performances since 2011.

A dark, nocturnal whimsy hammers through much of Shiner’s recently released sixth full-length album, BELIEVEYOUME. That makes sense on a narrative level — opening track and first single “Asleep in the Trunk” concerns a guy getting battered around the inside of a trunk, in the name of love.

This past weekend, cult Kansas City, Missouri quartet Boys Life hit the stage for their first shows in almost a decade. Both an all-ages gig in Lawrence, Kansas and a hometown bar show were played to celebrate the release of Home Is a Highway, a deluxe, career-compendium box set from archival specialists the Numero Group that includes two classic albums, their 1993 demo tape, their sides from split releases with Christie Front Drive, Vitreous Humor, Giants Chair and more.
