HASC is releasing an early awareness alert about a new regional workforce development initiative that may create future opportunities for Inland Empire healthcare employers. The state’s Employment Development Department has awarded the workforce development boards for San Bernardino County and Riverside County a $1 million regional coordination grant to launch the Inland Empire Upskilling Healthcare Pathways (IE UHP) initiative.

As we inch toward the end of summer, I want to share an update on several efforts underway at HASC that focus on both immediate challenges facing our hospitals and the longer-term health of the communities we serve. Over the past several months, HASC has conducted a series of listening sessions across our six-county region.

Across Southern California, hundreds of students are preparing for healthcare careers through specialized high school pathway programs. These pathways focus on nursing, patient care, emergency medicine, biotechnology, public health, medical assisting, sports medicine and other health professions. Such students offer a valuable opportunity for hospitals to build awareness, strengthen workforce pipelines and connect with future talent early in their career journey.

HASC, in partnership with AARP and the City of Los Angeles Workforce Development Board, recently held a virtual workshop on Rethinking Age at Work. The interactive employer training was designed to help employers rethink age in the workplace and turn demographic change into a competitive advantage. During the session, participants explored age-inclusive practices and practical strategies to help healthcare organizations: Better understand the needs and experiences of workers age 55 and older.

HASC is pleased to welcome three new associate members, effective Aug. 20. Associate provider member New Start Health Enterprises, Chatsworth, is a skilled nursing facility. HHS, a Texas-based company providing support services, and Medtronic, a Colorado-based producer of atrial fibrillation devices, are associate corporate members.

Craig Honig became the new chief executive officer of Servicon, a HASC endorsed partner, in May. The environmental services company recently shared his vision and priorities as he has begun leading the firm. HASC, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and City and County of Los Angeles public safety partners held their second Health Care Security and Emergency Preparedness Symposiums July 28 at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center (PVHMC), Pomona. With hospitals facing increased threats and swatting, such as a recent bomb scare at Huntington Health, the program offered timely and critical information.

HASC is pleased to welcome two new hospital chief executives. Anthony Coleman, DHA, joined St. Bernardine Medical Center and Community Hospital of San Bernardino as hospital president in June. David Kim, M.D., became chief executive officer of MemorialCare in July. In his new role, Coleman leads St. Bernardine Medical Center and Community Hospital of San Bernardino under a unified structure within CommonSpirit Health’s Southern California market.
